Most any major pharmacy chain will dispose of unused medication for you right along with their "open but out of date" on the shelf product that they cannot return for credit to the manufacturer. Another tip from my pharmacist. Never through empty prescription bottle in the trash without removing the label, especially if there are "refills left", especially pain killers. Never know who will wind up with a bottle that has refills left and try to refill them. Most pharmacies have policies to prevent that happening, but there is always the chance.

My beautiful wife recently passed away leaving me with about $30,000 in drugs…Every triplicate narcotic known, Zofrans, tubs of sulfidine burn cream, Neupagen, and many cancer drugs like Xeloda…and on and on..

The medical community won’t touch anything, ,,at church I met with a Nurse/Nun Practitioner from Medical Missionaries of Mary they took (very gladly) everything but the Xeloda. In our country the Xeloda sells for over $30 per pill so I posted them for free on the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Forum…

That’s what I did with all of Lynne’s and I feel a bit better for doing it…

On a funny note,,,the Nun was a little old lady, I gave her a cash donation, cases of bandages and medical supplies, plus all the drugs and narcotics,,,,and when I was finished (in the church parking lot) she asked if I could clean her windshield I said “absolutely”

I have seen reports about flushed medicine winding up in our drinking water. I am a little more concerned about how my toilet water wound up in my drinking water.

I think you can be charged with having illegal drugs if they are not in a bottle with your name on it, at least I have seen this several times on COPS. Anyway using someone else's drugs is just dumb.

Most of what I gave was sealed even the Methadone’s and Liquid Morphine, and the rest had complete descriptions of the pills on the bottles. If someone has a terminal disease and a is given a prescription for the oral chemo drug that costs over $5000 a bottle (times 4) and has no money or resources to get it (or they are in the Medicare Hole) I guess it would be too dumb to take the prescription free from me? When the person could follow along in the cancer forum the multi year battle my wife fought knowing she was prescribed and had these drugs and recently passed away?

And I guess you never said to someone (friend, acquaintance, family member) gee I have a headache do you have any Tylenol, Advil or?? These drugs open are treated just the same by the medical community, to many lawsuits and not enough common sense..

There is also a lot of information on the label that you may not want in the hands of some miscreant.

Although we would all like to find a way to put unused medications to a good use, unfortunately the practical aspects of doing it are just not worthwhile.

It's truly a shame about those expensive cancer drugs, but the same problems of safety apply.

So, as others point out, it's just a matter of finding a safe disposal method.

I'm sorry for your situation, Havasusun, but how did your bride come to accumulate such a collection beyond what she was using?

Rebecca,
Maybe someone already pointed this out. The pharmaceutical companies are not allowed to hand out all kinds of samples like they use to. Can't give the docs anything! So those unused medications are the only things the docs have to hand out to the undedprivilged.

wny_pat, maybe so. My doc gave me samples of Crestor, because I had such a reaction to Vytorin, but they were sealed.
