Last year (May 2009) I took 126 from Florence to I-5. The road surface was so rough it jarred one of my valve extensions loose. But I think I read somewhere that it's been resurfaced since then. If so, it's a good road and certainly the most direct.

They're all pretty much the same....but I like 38 out of Reedsport. Very nice drive.

Florence to I-5 on hwy 126 is a well traveled road. Like all the roads from hwy 101 to I-5 you must take a curvey road over the Coast Range. It's just something that has to be done. I think I'd rather take 126 than 20.

I like this route, too, but if the OP is already in Florence and heading north, it wouldn't make sense to go to Reedsport just to used Hwy 38. If they are headed south, yes, I would take 101 south to Reedsport then over on 38/138, if only to avoid Eugene traffic.

Actually, we are in Anacortes, WA today and heading south tomorrow on I-5. spending one night in Corvallis, OR, then heading out Sat a.m. to Carl G. Washburne St. Pk.

Would we be better off getting back on the I-5 and taking another route (other than 20) to the 101? Thanks.

I think you will find 22/18 from Salem a better road than 20 to get to 101. And, since you're going to be southbound, get back on I-5 at Reedsport 38/138 instead of 126 from Florence. There will be a lot of traffic through Lincoln City and Newport, so you won't make good time.

Since I made a paid reservation in Corvallis before asking questions about routes to take (duh on me), I guess we're committed to take Rt. 20 so we're not back tracking to Salem. DH is pretty safe driver, so I guess we'll be ok.

Thanks to all for your help. We will heed advice and take 38/38 from Reedsport back to I-5 tho.

I live in Florence and ran across this post in a random search. I decided to log on because Hwy 126 has been completely repaved and is awesome. There should only be one location of road construction later in the year and it goes through very quickly. I wouldn't think driving down to Reedsport would be necessary at all, although that is a beautiful drive as well. If you are going south and want to avoid Eugene traffic, another leisurely and beautiful route is the Territorial Road out of Veneta, which connects to the Cottage Grove/Lorane Hwy and then I-5. A number of fantastic wineries in the Lorane Valley. And one last tip, the kids who go to school in Corvallis take 99 up and back so they don't have to go to I-5 at Salem or Eugene at all. 99 goes all the way to Cottage Grove so it's possible to take that all the way south of eugene and connect to I-5 there.
