I have a Valterra attachment with a valve that allows me to open both the gray and black valves and allow the gray liquid to flow into the black. I always fill the gray long before the black gets 1/3 full. While dumping I have a tank rinser which I use until everything is clear. Is there anything wrong with this time saving idea? Thanks..

I always wondered about those transfer valves - if it allows gray water to enter the black water tank - what prevents the reverse from happening...

I really like my installed tank rinser's - what a time and hassle saving device

The only problem is that there may be a tendency to get black into the grey because the black is bigger and will flow faster than the grey. You don't want black into the grey.

yep, one day you'll be taking a shower and get a nice backup when the combined tanks are full

My MH has the over flow from the grey going into the black with a check valve. One way only. Seems to work good. By the way Liberty Coach has only one combined grey/black tank.

I have NEVER thought it was a good idea to have ANY direct path from my black tank to my food preparation area but that's just me. Our solution when we had the same problem was to simply dump dish water down the toilet to even out the tanks. Good luck / Skip

I'll keep mine separate. Sometimes we camp in areas that have pit toilets but no hookups. If my grey tank is getting full I use a 5 gallon bucket to transfer grey water from the tank to the pit toilet. I can usually go at least 7 days with the black tank before dumping.

Good post---haven't seen this one here before....
Hate to tell anyone....but the black and grey are connected in your stick-built home, too...and, both RV & home systems are subject to the traps "drying up" and allowing oders into otherwise "grey only" sinks and tubs/showers. Difference with RVs is that when traveling and/or warm weather, RVs are more prone than your home to traps emptying...IF grey water can flow into black tanks, odors CAN go the other way, unless there is some sort of fan system used. Unless it's a factory installed (RVIA) approved system, I wouldn't do it....

The difference is that my 1200 gallon tank (or city sewer) most likely won't backup in a weekend..

The other issue is we have reasonable "open" access to flush the black water tank, where as the gray tank is mostly - a fill, slosh and drain cleaning method..

We were at a park that pumped out the tanks. The guy came and pulled both valves at the same time. Guess What- I ended up with black in the gray tank. Luckily the galley tank is separate. It took me some time at a dump station to get the bathroom gray tank cleaned out. Personally, I would not open both valves at the same time even though in theory it should work.
