...and if you shop hard you can find a bit newer rig with slides for not much more than your price point.

If you shop, you can have your pie and eat it too. Here is 1 example of a DP w/slide and here is another DP, that cost just a little more.
You really don't gain much by going gas, as shown in this gas model and you can not get the length or capacity in gas you can in diesel. Here is another gasser, but again, be careful of the carrying capacity of the coach.

I would advise at least a living room slide. Our Imperial has only 1 slide(a large l/r slide) Our LaPalma had two slides and we really do not miss the bedroom slide. If you take your time you may find good deal on a mid 90s DP with one slide. We found ours online on consignment for 47k. Ronnie

I lived in a 36' Class A for a year -n- a half. IMHO, the slide made ALL the difference. Doubled the living space when parked. You definintely need to go sit in both for more than just a few minutes.
What's the big deal about a diesel? Are you planning on towing a large payload, keeping it for a couple of decades and putting a million miles on it?
Mine had a V-10 gasser. Bought it used. Had plenty of power, even towing my Jeep. The previous owner towed a Saturn, and traveled all the Western States, judging by the map decal by the door.
I eventually sold it to a retired coworker, who had it another couple of years before getting something else.
Diesel fuel is more expensive now, has a higher maintenace factor, noise, stink, etc. It does have benefits too (obviously), but unless you really NEED a diesel, I would recommend putting that as a second priority when considering diesel vs. a slide out!
Mine wasn't fancy, but the walls didn't close in either!

Find a diesel with slide, it'll be worth the effort.

1. My first 2 motorhomes were before wide body. The next was a wide body, no slide, and it had a lot more room to us. Now we have 2 slides and don't know how we got along without that space.
2. If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. In 37 years you haven't learned this yet. You are a slow learner.
3. Newmar was the first to put a slide in production RVs in '90. If you can find a Newmar from that time it will probably have a good slide.

It all depends on you and the wife. I have met many people that full time in a class b. And many more that full time in class A with no slides.

For $40,000 I would buy a gas MH unless you're planning on driving 25,000 miles a year in it. Even than, I'm not sure about buying a DP as you (and I) operate on a budget. If you spend some time on this forum, you'll see that DP and gassers both have drivetrain and chassis problems from time to time. The problem with DP's is that the cost to repair most anything (radiators, injection pumps, brakes, suspension components, driveshafts, and transmissions) starts at $5000 and goes up quickly from there. Routine maintenance will also be higher.
Listen to the DW-----don't even think about buying one without a slide. If you do, you'll be doing lots of listening (mostly unpleasant) in the months ahead.
My wife wanted nothing to do with MH's as she had only been in non-slide units. When I showed her our current unit (2 slides) and saw not only space in the living area but space in the bedroom area, she said OK (I bought it on the spot)!!!
With some shopping and dealing you might be able to find a 2006 gasser with 2 slides, the 362 hp V10, and a 5 speed transmission for close to what you want to spend.
