my wife is retiring finally in oct. when we will become full time rvers. we would like to pay cash and stay under 40000. weve been to a couple of dealers who acted like we were the second coming of dum & dumber. now i have spent a couple of months on line looking at diesel and gas rvs. i know there is a good chance im wrong but im trying to convince the lovly lady ive been married to for 37 yrs that we should buy a older non slide wide body diesel,(94 safari continental, 95 american dream, etc., with a gvwr 26000 to 32000 rather than a newer 1998-2003 gas with slides and gvwr 15000 to 20000. i really like the bigger heavier diels. she likes slides and newer. any and all comments and help would be appr.

Having had a TT without slide and one with, I can't imagine vacationing, let alone fulltiming in a rig without a slide. That's a small space you're looking at living in full time.

Buying a older coach can work if you are pretty mechanically inclined because you are going to have to work on it to keep it alive. There are not a lot of coaches that are built for the constant use that full timing does to a MH. If you can't fix it yourself it can eat you alive in repair costs.

If you are planning to only put a few thousend miles on per year, you will be better off price wise with a gasser and definitely one with at least 2 slides. It takes years to overcome the added cost of diesel.

If the RV doesn't have at least one good size slide then you will be looking at a lot of trouble from the DW. A slide makes a RV more livable. How much the GVWR is doesn't tell you how much the CCC is. For full time the CCC makes a big difference.

Find a diesel you like and take her for a ride in it. If that doesn't convince her nothing will. Better yet, let her DRIVE the diesel......
We also thought we could full time in a non slide coach. Our Dynasty was 40' so we thought we were ok. Now that we upgraded, wow!.. What were we thinking!!!....Dennis

Good grief Man, don't you know "if Momma ain't happy, ain't no one happy"? I completely agree with you about a diesel MH but IMHO you must have 2 slides. When our slides are not extended, the MH is completely usable but I get antsy because it is too confining. There is no way I would be a happy traveler for 6 months a year if I felt closed in. No slides and I feel too claustrophobic to enjoy myself, maybe your DW feels this way too.
I am being as honest as Abe when I tell you that I could not handle traveling or living in a MH for 6 months a year if not for the slides. We saw many units without a BR slide and I could not get into the bed without ducking for a corner TV cabinet, brushing against the wall, the lambrequins or window valance. There is no way I could sleep in such a small coffin-like space.
Listen to your DW. Make her happy.

Gas or Diesel you'll want slides at least in the living area if you plan to full-time it. Our Journey is only 34' but the two slides make it allot more livable, especially when you have two goldens in the coach. A gas coach will do you fine depending on how many miles you plan to put on the MH per year. If you plan on putting lots of miles on the coach and do lots of traveling thru mountains then you probably will want a diesel. But remember this if your wife isn't happy you won't be either! LOL!! Good Luck in your search and welcome to the forum!
