I have a similar book about the Grand Canyon. Very interesting the dumb things people do to get themselves in to trouble.
I do not know if this is Urban Legend or not but I recall a story several years ago about a Yellowstone Park Ranger that lost his job after punching a park guest.
Why did he punch the guest you may ask???
The Ranger came upon the guest and his child in amongst some bears. The guest was attempting to place the child on the Bear's shoulders.
The Ranger pulled the child a safe distance from the bear and when approached by the father (who was apparently belligerent) he punched him in the face in a fit of rage, fear and raw emotion as to the genuine stupidity the father displayed.
I ride it like I stole it!
.......and I just may have.......

I plan to take my toy hauler with my Goldwing Trike to Yellowstone. Would that be a problem with animals as close as you encountered?

Nah, plenty of trikes and bikes around in Yellowstone. Just stay alert for "critters" in your flight path. Slamming into a Moose, Elk, Bear, or Bison is a guaranteed way to ruin your bike and your health. The moose _might_ be mildly inconvenienced, a bear or bison may not notice a Goldwing impact at all.

The Bison can determine what distance is comfortable. Two years ago we were among a bunch of people viewing a herd of bison off in the distance. With everyone watching the herd, a lone bull bison came up from behind and just walked through the crowd, less than two feet from a lot of people. They were not pressing him and he couuldn't care less about the people. I felt completely safe as there were two cars between me and the bull.

I'm not sure I'd feel all that safe after seeing what a buffalo did to a one ton flatbed truck. Our company was called out to a large ranch to remove a two-way radio from a wrecked truck.
I asked what happened, thinking maybe the driver rolled it down a ditch onto its roof or something. Turns out, the truck was loaded with loose hay, and the driver pulling up to feed the herd. He drove the truck in between a mama and her calf, and she got an attitude.
She hooked a horn on the side of the truck and flipped it over like it was a Tonka Toy. Fortunately for the driver, she only raged against the truck itself. Of course, I'd guess his Fruit-of-the-Looms might have been another casualty.

Doesn't anyone want to give advice on petting the cute, furry grey dogs that come out very early in the morning in the Valley of the Moons?
lol
Yeah, it's a real treat to see the animals, but you would think common sense would tell (most) people, "Hey, they're called 'wild animals' for a reason.".
I have a great Yellowstone story I need to share one day. Shows the utter stupidity of some folks.

We saw plenty of stupid people at Yellowstone last month. They were almost as fun to watch as the animals.

In addition to our bear jam and the potty-mouthed tourists mentioned earlier, we also had a bison that nearly side-swiped our truck on the same day. We were driving along on the east side of Yellowstone and there was a herd of bison on both sides of a hill next to the road. The road was cut through the hill. DH was going slow due to the bison on both sides of the road and one of the bison lost his/her footing and slid backward down the hill about 3 feet in front of our truck. Five seconds later and it would have been on MY side of the truck!!!!
Regarding bear jams and motorcycles--there were several motorcycles stopped up the road from the bear jam with the mama bear and her cubs that day. They were waiting for her to get away from the road before they continued to the north. All in all, the rangers did a great job of controlling people near the wild animals. We just happened to be going through an area with a mama grizzly nearly on the road and the ranger hadn't arrived yet. The mama grizzly and her cubs were just minding their own business and eating along the roadside. They were beautiful.
We were there in late June this year. Despite the stupid tourists who would walk within a few feet of a wild animal and just couldn't fathom that a bison or bear or wolf is dangerous, we had a great time. We did a lot of hiking and really enjoyed seeing Yellowstone away from the crowds.

We took our trike there last summer and it is a great way to see Yellowstone. just take your time and keep your eyes open. We came upon a large male grizzly early in the morning and stopped well away from him. Got some great pictures. About the time we stopped a ranger pulled up next to us and told us we were smart to stop where we did as this was one of the largest males in the park and was not very tourist friendly. We are going back next summer and will take the trike with us again. Have fun, you will love the freedom the trike gives you while touring the park.
