It is covered under a section of the highway traffic act in alberta, I have never heard of it being used though. I suppose it could be used as an argument for your insurance to have tp pay some of the damages to the other guys vehilce if your rear ended? Personally I take mine off if not being used however lots of work trucks leave them on 7/24/365 so I would not worry about it and just do what works for you.

Nope, there is no quota. Officers in any jurisdiction of which I am aware are free to write as many cites as they wish.

Have always had the urge to cross-breed a big round bale stinger with a ball-mount...

Hi, take the hitch out of your receiver. Working at new car dealers since 1968, I have seen vehicles that have been rear ended with the hitch in the receiver and the rear of the tow vehicle's frame gets badly bent, usually downward. Now picture this: You are on vacation, three states away from home, You left your hitch in the receiver, got rear ended, and bent your frame. NOW WHAT! That hitch is just a lever, making it easier to bend your frame. Where are we going to get it fixed? How long will it take to get this fixed? How are we going to get our tow vehicle and trailer home. Can the family stay three states away from home, for two weeks, to get this fixed? Maybe it would have been better if some one in my family walked into it and got hurt, so I would now remember to remove it when not using it! Or does there really have to be a law?

This spring I threw my back out 600 miles from home removing that big heavy hitch and stowing it in the bay....left it on ever sence!

I leave mine locked on when camping, that mud flap and hitch is heavy, awkward, and pricey.

If you get rear ended hard enough to bend your frame with the hitch installed then the car that hit you will be up under your truck without the hitch. Then your most likely not driving it home anyway.

That is why you carry rental car coverage so you can get home. I have $70 a day $2,100 max if at home or until the truck is fixed and returned to me if out of state. Check you policies and add this coverage if you don't have it. BTW you can rent a HD pick up for $70 a day from any Ryder truck rental so you can get your TT home if you have a fiver you are going to have to find someone with a hitch to get your RV home.

Well I did take it out, in part in light of your experience, and to save my shins. Yes it is heavy but not so heavy I cannot move it.

BTW my AMA (AAA from Alberta) covers me for instances like that, but it would be terribly inconvenient. Any MVA would have similar effect if it disabled your TV.

Is this really true? I thought rental companies did not allow the towing of anything behind their vehicles.

In Oklahoma, people (walking, driving, etc) don't get close enough to the hitch for it to matter

Bet that will stop a lot of those "PIT" maneuvers you see on cop shows and deter tailgaters.. Or even those that race up on and seem to want to push you outta the way..

I can clearly see that your hitch does not block your plate either..
