We use SKYPE both in eastern and western Canada. For something like $2.79 per month, we had unlimited calls to Canada and the US. Computer-to-computer calls are free. When in Canada, we pick a campground with WiFi and are in business. Don't need SKYPE in the US since we then use our cell phones.

SCVJeff - I believe that Net10 phones use CDMA technology and that most, if not all, Canadian providers are using GSM. That's why Net10 doesn't provide any service in Canada. I queried them about Canadian service and they said not only do they not provide service there, but if I tried they might even cancel my phone.

Since we'll be in the eastern shores area and from the suggestions, looks like we'll pick one up that runs on the Bell network when we get there.

Thanks again for all the help.

Net 10 has no agreements in Canada. We use it in the states but it shuts down as soon as you cross the border. I use Telus at home here in Canada but have heard Verizon is an excellent choice for both sides...

Another Myth. Rogers is GSM, Belus are CDMA

Hi,

To be fair, Bell, Telus and Sasktel are all in the process of migrating to GSM. (Another cash grab for the costs of new hardware? YOU BET.)

CDMA will gradually be phased out in Saskatchewan over the next two years. This may leave even more "holes" in coverage as CDMA is able to use more than one tower at a time in weak signal areas. GSM apparently can not do this, and there is little chance that additional towers will be added in weak spots.

We used wifi in the campground and Skype through our laptop. For $2.99 a month I can call any phone number in US or Canada. If there is a good wifi signal we were able to have audio and video,

I was in Canada last month and just added Canada coverage to my Verizon plan for about $10. for a month. I get to call Canada and US numbers without roaming and long distance charges. I put my home phone on forwarding so I get all of my normal calls. When I got back home I just changed back to my regular plan.

Well, touring through NB, PEI and NS, if a breakdown occurs, you have a good chance of it being 'in the middle of nowhere' with nothing much around you. While I don't feel a NEED to a cell phone, I sure feel better with one.

Visit here, enter a city that's along your route and see if there are any Atlantic Superstores along your route. I'd give them a call and see if they sell the PC Mobile phones. They have some very inexpensive phones (here) and they use the Bell Mobility network, which will give you probably the best coverage in the area. In the long run, I'll bet it'll all be cheaper than any rental you'll get.

You can also purchase them at Loblaws and Petro-Can. Guaranteed, if you're in the "middle of nowhere" an East Coaster will stop and try to help, might even invite you home for supper.

Try a convenience store and don't be fussy. They all cover the territory and I've heard good of them.

We are currently traveling on PEI and have just spent 2 weeks in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We have used Skype exclusively for our phone calls home. We paid for a month of service to call cell phones and landlines for about $3.00 and I have been able to call my 94 year old mother every night. We just make sure we are in a campground with Wi-Fi which has not been a problem. As to needing help on the road, although traffic is not particularly heavy and travel is easy through the provinces we have never been "all by ourselves" on the road. There has always been other cars that we could have called on to help.
