AT&T has full coverage in Canada and for a very small fee you can sign up for the Canada plan and get reduced rates while there. Probably your CHEAPEST way to go would be to just buy a NET 10 Phone which has Canada service included in all of their packages. It's a pay as you go plan with no contract and you can add air time by simply pushing a button on the phone. Same or better coverage than AT&T or Verizon.

If you want the straight skinny on cells in Canada, listen up. Rogers and speakout are******outside of big cities. They put up a tower in each province and claim national service. So, where you actually find a spot that has a bounce to a tower, you will get hit with extra long distance charges because the tower is 50 or so miles away and may be in a different area code. Not to mention bad connections.

Bell in the Atlantic provinces goes by Aliant, and have the only network in the Atlantic region with reasonable coverage. Out west, and that may include SK and MB but definitely includes AB and BC, Telus has the biggest network.

However, Bell and Telus have a joint carrier agreement and will probably merge someday (Bellus) but, as a customer, the key thing to know is that you can use both networks if you're with either.

In Ontario and Quebec, Bell and Rogers both have good networks.

Take the advice to go to Loblaws and pick up a phone with a grain of salt, they only operate in Ontario and some of Quebec, unless they've expanded out west. And all these little 'deal' guys have some kind of interline arrangement where they bought time in cities, and are probably dead if you are on the road.

Your best bet for a short visit is probably either to get a Canada package from your home provider, or get a Kindle and use the email function which operates off the Bellus cell network when in Canada at no cost other than the $180 to buy it. PM me if you want to set up for me to take your emails and call Coach-net for you. (I've asked, they don't take email help! calls.)

Hi,

The PC phones are available at Extra Foods and Superstore in the West. I can't speak for the East.

Bell's phones do indeed work on the Sasktel Network.

I believe AT&T only piggybacks on Rogers in Canada and as another poster mentioned Roger's coverage area is limited.

What provider do you use? Verizon, at first, told us they did not have an international plan, when we went to AK in 2008.

We just came back from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We are with Verizon and didn't have any problem calling home in Maine. However, we couldn't text message....
And just so you know, you can't talk on the phone while driving in Nova Scotia.....against the law.

Skipnchar - I'm currently a NET10 customer, but according to their web site their phones don't work in Canada or Mexico. Their International plan only provides numbers that you can give to friends in those countries for them to call you.

My primary purpose for the cell phone was for emergency use only and making forward reservations. Guess I'm down to mail ordering a phone or waiting until we get there and seeing what's available. If we have WiFi at the park, I can always use Skype on my laptop. I have a broadband card as well, but it's tied to Verizon and of no help in Canada.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

YOUR cellular provider has no coverage, or they do not have a reciprocal agreement with a Canadian carrier? That's a BIG difference.

AT&T works fine up there. What you need to be careful of is broadband data cards as most don't have any agreements and the data rates are out of sight.

Did that two years ago. Stopped in first Walmart we found and bought a pay as you go phone. I think it was a Virgin Mobile. Worked almost everywhere. Just tosssed it when we got home. Cheap, easy, effective.

Get a Blackberry - then you can PIN free anywhere in north america.

BTW I have to echo comments about Rogers outside of the big cities, we live in an area that is supposed to be in the Rogers coverage, ... well maybe if you climb to the top of a tall tree? People complain about there Rogers coverage out this way all the time.
