We bought a used 27' Keystone Hornet a few weeks ago. When getting it set up, I noticed it only had 20lb tanks on it.
Our Dutchmen we had used 30lb tanks, as do most others I've noticed. I was planning on changing out the 20's for 30's. Other than the mounting hardware is there anything I need to be aware of?
I have already checked to make sure the hose is long enough to reach the top of the new tanks, if I do go ahead and change them out.

Hi,
Unless you boondock for extended periods or use the RV in extreme cold why bother with larger tanks? (Unless you own them already).

Just make sure that the extra tongue weight will not be a problem.

Teh only difference is that 30# tanks are taller. THe hold-down rod would need to be long enough, the hose to the TT system would have to be long enough, and the outer cover would need to be replaced (assuming you want it to look proper). Other than that, you should be good to go.

Myself I would stay with the 20s unless you use a lot of propane it just won't be worth it. You need to stop and think how often and for how long of a time do you use your stove, refridgerator, furnace and hot water heater. How many times do you camp in a year. and do you boondock or use a camp ground. I was going to make the same switch but for me it wouldn't have paid off. I just empteed my 2nd tank in two years, maybe you get out more than I do or Maybe you don,t use camp grounds but think it over and consider if it is worth the price for you to make the change.

I've often thought of changing mine out but with two tanks and a regulator I've never been caught without propane... Food for thought while 20lb tanks weight just under 40 pounds when full the 30lb tanks will weigh just over 55 pounds when full. Not concerned with the tongue weight just manhandling them when removing and filling...

Mine has 20's on it. I bought a set of new 30's for a great deal on Craigslist and then filled them up. A year later they are still sitting on the garage floor unused. I have gone on 16 trips since my last fill up. One of the 20's is now empty and I'm still working on the other. At this rate, I don't see any reason to swap in my 30's unless I'm going to do some winter camping with expectations of running the furnace quite a bit.

Probably not worth the expense unless you use a lot of propane. One 30# tank last us all season.

I changed from 2x30 to 2x40.. One of the 30's had a bad opd valve (wouldn't fill, could only run the pilot on the oven, a single burner on the stove and the regulator switched to the other tank. So it was buy another 30, or a pair of 40's. The only thing I had to do, other then the tanks themselves was take the old threaded rod to the hardware store, but a new, longer one, cut it to size with a hacksaw, and install it in the carrier. My old tank cover mostly fits, the bottom 3 or 4 inches of the tanks are exposed, but I can live with that. I take the trailer to grandpa's house in the winter, and there is snow on the ground, I have yet to empty the tanks in the last year.

If you travel much with the tt and get caught on the road with no propane, I think it would be easier to find and swap out a 20# bottle than to get a 30# filled. There are lots of places that have swap bottles. We don't stay in one place very long and are on the road for days at a time. I have thought that I might be better off with 20's in place of the 30's that I have now.
