X2 on Ocean Waves. They actually have some sites with trees, which is rare on OBX.

Ocean Banks is a good choice but hard to get reservations. A great alternative is Camp Hatteras. It is right next door. It has slightly larger spaces and a bit more amenities also. It also costs more than Ocean Waves. Either way, just being down there is wonderful. What a beautiful place.

We always go to frisco woods campground in frisco it is right on the sound with great sunsets , as for the beach the access is right accross the road and you can drive on beach w your 4 x 4 bring a fishing rod for some great surf fishing or just relax on the beach and grill something , not crowded at all very relaxing side of island. Also not far from okracoke ferry for a day trip.

We just returned from the OBX a few days ago. Stayed at Camp Hatteras for 6 days. It was a very nice campground with larger than expected sites. Not cheap though. We spent the money and went for the Premier sites that are right off of the dune near the ocean.
We drove thru Ocean Waves and KOA while we were there and the sites were just way to close for my liking. I would'nt hesitate on going back to Camp Hatteras at all, although I think we are going to do the CG on Ocracoke Island next time.
Hope this helps. Safe Travels.

Since we are beach people and love to surf fish, we, like J&C stated above, prefer to be further down the island toward Hatteras village and love Frisco Woods. The sites could be bigger, but they seem pretty open since most of them back up to water. There is a restaurant/bar within walking distance, the camp store is well stocked, and the beach access is just down the street and across the road. Being on the sound side, you have great views and terrific sunsets. Here is our favorite site:

We stayed at Camp Hatteras last month. We like it, W/E/S, paved sites, cable, ocean or sound side sites, indoor and outdoor pools that are clean and nice.
Just be warned, as you see in the photo you will need to keep your awning in because of the consistent 20+ mph wind.
Just saw your night train in your sig, you might want to allow for a visit to the new Harley store on 158 before you cross the bridge to the island.
Time to Plan to Camp (except Duane and Randu, they're still camping )
