I was on the way to Niagara Falls last week and got pulled into an inspection station just shy of the bridge on the QEW. They weighed me and told me that I was 240 kg over for my G license. I have an F350 towing a 35 ft Cameo.. The GVW on the Carriage is 15600lbs. "G" license is up for towing up to 4600 kg. or 10000lb.They did let me go after I dumped my freshwater and redistributed a little weight. I was still over. But then they said I must get an "A" license.
In order to get an A license I will have to write the same test as a transport truck driver which requires a $200. medical form filled out by my doctor as well as the cost of the drivers test and the $20. "Official MTO Drivers Handbook. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. to $350.
The officers are just doing their job but I believe it should be required by law when a RV dealership gets the plates for you that if an "A" license is required it should be done at that level or at least be informed. The fine if I'd have gotten it would have been around $500 plus having it impounded and the loss of a vacation. Anyway just for your info especially traveling on any of the 400 series of highways during the summer these guys are everywhere.

Muskie,
May I assume this only applies to drivers and rigs registered in Canada?

Good question, I would assume that it would still depend on your driver's license. On Ontario licenses it tells us the category and the weight limit for towing. I don't know about each state license???
Sorry.

No problem. You could not be expected to know each states rules.
We took our fw to BC a couple of years ago and the passport was all that was required.
Never was asked for a drivers license.

Thanks for the headsup. I've heard rumours they might be checking, but believe you are the first to report here.

Here is the "G" Licence info quote from Ontario Ministry of Transportation web site..
"Any car, van or small truck or combination of vehicle and towed vehicle up to 11,000 kg (24,200 lbs) provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kg. (10,120 lbs)".

I never plan on going that big! Eyeing the Cougar 276RLS as our next upgrade..est gross on 5'er would be 4,627kgs (10,180 lbs).

Avoiding 400 series highways is no guarantee of not being pulled over. The MTO boys (and girls)roam and hang out a lot at the upper parking lot above the Niagara Falls. I've had buses up on ramps at this location.

Go safely!

Am I correct in presuming the 4600KGS is the weight on the towed vehicle's axles and excludes pin or hitch weight??

Many states also REQUIRE an endorsement for towing any combo that weighs over 15K# too. Nevada does and I have it. Others states do but many don't know about it and do NOT have it. You should check your local laws. You CAN be fined in any state that asks and you are not licensed properly.

You are correct, It is weight on the axles. After 65 yrs of age must have annual medical, same written test and drivers test that commercial A licensed drivers require. Only Ontario licensed drivers need to worry, all others as per their home province or state.

Age discrimination! They don't think others might have a disability that would effect their ability to maintain controll?

Muskie, did they check your RGW on your truck registration? Some say you have to add your pin weight to your Registerred Gross Weight and some say, no, this is just required for Commercial Vehicles and not RV's.
