We have been traveling in our TT these past 22 months and for 4 weeks have been going from place to place looking for a toilet pedal part.

Now after finding the part, and while DH was "fixing" it with that part, another part was broken .. we think that trying to fix something one has never tackled b4 is not the wisest choice.

Now have appointment to have the rv repair guys fix the toilet pedal on Monday after we leave the rv park and b4 going north to our next stop .. frustrating to be DW when DH gets subborn !

So was thinking that maybe since we are in our 70s maybe we should have had it repaired in an rv repair shop to begin with ... DH had a hard time getting up and down to fix the pedal.

Question : How many out there have decided to have a repair shop fix their broken items rather than tackle it themselves?

For us it just depends on what it is. We are not real mechanical and weren't when we lived in the stix & brix. We try to fix, clean, wax, caulk, replace screws, fix broken door latches, whatever we are capable of. Since we are fulltimers it's difficult to leave it for service, but we have had to a couple of times. We replaced our toilet pedal, it was easy, but we still need to replace the toilet seal. You have to do what you are comfortable doing.

I'm just too cheap to pay shop rates for stuff I can do myself.

For over 35 years I have fixed about 95% or more of the needed repairs. My finding usally is if your handy at all at fixing things the RV is not a big problem. Many items such as your toilet pedal, it may very well be less money to try fixing it and if you break something else along the way so what. If all fails you can probaly buy a whole new toilet for just about the same money an RV dealer would have charged to fix the pedal. Now I'm not a full timer so that leaves me the down time between trips to fix of repair. Living in it full time things such as a non-working toilet could become a problem and easier to have someone else do it.

I say good for you and DH that you try and do these jobs.I agree you have to draw the line somewhere as far as experience goes? But I also like to learn something new and sometimes that proves to be a bad decision(theory contradicts my last sentence oh well lol). But we live and learn, as long as no one gets hurt?
I just like doing projects myself and most come out great and much cheaper in the end.And I can hopefully pass on my knowledge to someone else and save them a buck or two?

I'm with Skylos, too cheap to pay someone to fix something that Gary or I can fix. Before I had Gary in my life, you'd be amazed at what I would tackle.

...for me, it comes down to simple economics: dollar per dollar, if I were going to do any work, I would get paid more than it costs us to pay a mechanic.
My time performing tasks within my skill-set is monetarily more valuable than what it costs us to pay a good mechanic; this makes it an easy choice.

It will always be worth it to pay a good mechanic!

Count me in with Skylos and Kitty....its not rocket science...at least not to me so I should be able to tackle it.....but I do understand that there are some out there...okay...there are a lot out there who just aren't mechanically inclined like a lot of us are...and that is nothing to be ashamed of...I can't play a piano or sing..

All depends on how handy you are. I do it all myself, personally, because it costs too much to get half-assed work done at a shop.
