I am hooking up a 12 volt light... the 12 volt wires from the rig are: 1. solid white 2. white with orange stripe, The wires from the light are: 1 solid white 2. white with black stripe.
Solids to solids right?

Not much to go on, but I would: Determine which wire from the "rig" is hot and which is ground using a simple VOM. Then, if your "light" has a switch, I'd connect the rig hot (not ground) to the wire that is switched, and the other light wire to the rig's ground wire. I never trust striped colors on wires - I always use a VOM to check and ensure correct and safe connections.
Good luck!

Check with a multimeter but I bet the rv white is ground and the orange stripe wire is positive (hot). On the fixture the outer case should be connected to the ground and the center button should be positive. If the fixture has a switch the positive should go to the switch first not the bulb. That is the jist your fixture may vary.

You don't even need a multi-meter, you can check it with a test light and see which wire from the source is hot, then hook that wire to the switched side as the others said.

Are you sure? If the polarity is reversed won't the light bulb suck light in instead of radiating light?

It is good practice to maintain polarity. Why not do it?

the light doesnot care even a lamp in house doesnot care you can plug them inether way, but if it were a motor then polarity will count.
