OK so i'm not a plumbing guy- I went on the roof of my TT to inspect the tank vents for any nests or blockages. I simply touched the vent stack cover and it disintegrated into my hand (probably from sun exposure). My question is- can you just put a wire mesh screen or something more durable on there? I realize that maybe some rainwater can get down in there and into the holding tank, but if these cheap plastic jobs can't hold up, what are the alternatives?

So, go to a plumbing guy and ask for something better!

OR, seriuosly, go to the RV parts guy and get another cheap plastic one----BUT, get a spray can of exterior white paint, and paint it before you install it....then the plastic won't deteriorate!
Good luck!

Get a metal one. I replaced mine 8 years ago. No more problems.

you have a couple options

1. buy another cheap one and call it a day
2. buy a PVC "T" in the proper size (think it's like 2 1/2") and glue it to the top of the black PVC stack and it'll vent and keep rain water out
3. buy a 'shark fin' (search on the forum for more info) from Camping World or any online RV parts dept. I picked up 2 for my trailer cuz the original tank vent covers were cracked from age. I'm currently in process of painting shark teeth on them (picture WWII fighter planes) to go with the theme of our trailer.

you can go either way, the metal ones won't break the bank, but if a bird makes a nest, you will wish you would have bought one. or worse a mud dobber.

You gotta be kidding, right? You have too much time on your hands.

I'm going to try the pvc tee with some silicone sealer. I came across a guy on a website that says he hasn't had any tank odors since he went to the pvc tee that is faced toward the front of the trailer and vents sewer gas pretty well apparently

You don't need any silicone sealer. PVC cement is more permanent and probably cheaper.

I got the install done and looks good. A little breezy today so while I was on the roof I definitely got the evidence that it can draw sewer gas out of the tanks better than the stock cap!

You're not going to use silicone to seal where the pipe meets the roof material are you? I'd use some Dicor lap sealant or Pro-Flex. Silicone is kind of like my brother-in-law.....It never really does the job, and just when you think you've gotten rid of it all, it leaves #&*$! behind........
