Also in B.C., there are numerous alerts and some evacuations underway. From: http://www.bcforestfireinfo.gov.bc.ca/

What’s New - Thursday, July 29

Campfire bans are in place across most of the province.

Highway 37, 28 km south of the Yukon border is temporarily closed due to smoke. Highway 20, 20 km west of Alexis Creek, is closed in both directions. Visit DriveBC.ca for updates.

Two evacuation orders are in place:

•All residences in a one-mile (1.6 km) radius from Bonaparte Lake. Residents can call the Thompson Nicola Regional District at 1-866-377-7188.

Beginning 8:30 p.m. on July 28, a tactical evacuation began near Pelican Lake, located approximately 73 km west of Quesnel. For more information please contact the Cariboo Regional District at 250-392-4283.

There are also evacuation alerts in place:

There are lots of fires burning in the central interior of British Columbia.
If the weather stays like this it will get a lot worse.
I would avoid travel through the area, it's dangerous.
Williams Lake, Lac La Hache and Quesnel are covered with smoke right now.
Many fires are burning west of Quesnel.
If this fire gets into the pine beetle kill it will be a disaster of unknown proportions.

People have no idea how much dead wood is standing in BC.

Sue, first you say you guys are going to drive the Top of the World Hwy this summer and it washes out. Then you say, it might be fixed by then so you will check it out, then it washes out again. Then you mention, you are going to drive the Cassiar this summer, both directions. Forest fires have closed it.
Are you beginning to see a pattern in all this???? What is your trip going to cause to happen in Alaska?
I do believe I would just go camp at either Meziadin Lake PP or Kinaskan Lake PP until it opens. Give those kayaks you carry a good paddling and catch a few fish. Sounds good.

Hmmmm ... we were also going to do a jaunt up the Dempster, and it has been closed on and off too. Maybe Joe is right.

Although, we have to drive north through Williams Lake, Lac La Hache and Quesnel. Might be similar to a trip we took in 2001 when B.C. was pretty much shut down due to forest fires. No backcountry travel was permitted, not even hiking. Not many photos from that trip due to the amount of smoke.

Travelling from Lake Louise to Radium Hot Springs we wondered why the highway was open. Flames were visible both sides of the road, with trees spontaneously bursting into flames. Travel was still permitted but no stopping was allowed.

That was our "hot tour". Intention was to visit B.C.'s and Alberta's hot springs, which we did, with fires burning throughout the journey. We sat in Nakusp Hot Springs with helicopters flying overhead carrying water from Upper Arrow Lake to the fires.

oh my! in about a week we will be in Whitehorse. We are meeting friends in Stewart the 15th of august. They are coming in from Nevada. To get to Stewart from Whitehorse if 37 is closed is an extra 850 miles. Good thing diesel is so cheap in Canada.

Water bomber crashed:

The Buffalo airplane, owned by Abottsford-based Conair Ltd. and contracted by the provincial Forests Ministry, crashed Saturday evening about 160 kilometres northeast of Vancouver in the B.C. Interior.

While the subsequent fire and steep terrain were preventing search-and-rescue crews from reaching the crash site, a spokesman for Conair said the company doesn't believe anyone survived.

Diesel is not cheap once you hit the Alaska Highway.
