We are looking to upgrade from our 2002 30' Cardinal, but have discovered that we are somewhat limited by the hitch weight our truck can handle - only 1900 pounds.
I came up with the 1900 pound weight limit by subtracting the actual scale-measured weight of my truck (w fuel and people) from the GVWR for the truck. (9200 - 7300 = 1900). It is SO hard to talk about this stuff in a way that makes sense to everyone!!
I've seen many people saying that you only have to worry about the rear GAWR (we've got 3000 lbs to spare there), but it sure seems like the GVWR would be important too!

I agree with the other poster, the luxury brands are on the heavy side. Some other posters have mentioned in other threads that newbies should buy the "biggest" truck they can afford and I agree wholeheartedly. If that's not in your budget, I would stick to the lightweight 5ers or put some money aside for a 1 ton in a configuration that will handle your future 5er.
In case you're wondering, my wife and I only wanted a lightweight trailer (ours has a 9500 lb GVWR...loaded to 8000 lbs) so a 3/4 or 1 ton would work fine. And we don't know if we'll go to another 5er or to a MH after this. We plan to keep our 5er at least 5 years, probably more, and would be getting a new (used) truck then anyways.

If you are going to do anything... isn't worth the effort to do it right in the first place. You see buzzards dodging traffic to get that one bite of dead rabbit...but because he is crazy enoght to eat in the middle of the road, does not mean that it is what you want to do....
