I'm new to the forum and excited about all the useful information I've been reading here!

We are looking to upgrade from our 2002 30' Cardinal, but have discovered that we are somewhat limited by the hitch weight our truck can handle - only 1900 pounds. (My guess is the old Cardinal is probably too heavy for it - little did we know!)

So far, Montana is the only higher-end fiver I've found that has anything close to that on hitch weight. Can anyone suggest any others?

Keep in mind that the published hitch weights are the unloaded weights. By the time you include any options and then load all your "stuff" in the trailer you will most likely be well over that.

What is the 5th wheel hitch weight rating... Make sure you're looking at the 5th wheel weight rating and not a receiver type hitch rating.

And you need to consider the overall tow weight rating as well. you don't want to push your truck over the limit for safety reasons as well as longevity of the truck drivetrain.

,,,I'm a little confused on the 1900 part,,,,,your payload/pin weight should be a lot more than that with a 2500 truck ??? But in that range Keystone makes some nice Cougars well under 1900 pin/hitch weight.

The normal acceptable hitch weight for a 5er is 15 to 20 percent of the trailer weight.

Don't be too sure, I find references online (http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2008/dodge/ram_2500/specifications/index.html) that place the regular cab 2500 payload at 2770 - if its an extended/crew cab type truck with 4x4 and 500 pounds of people in it, I can well see it down to 1900 effective payload.

,,,Your right,,,I was reading it that he was saying his overall payload was 1900,,,,,my bad,,,,,but as said before Look at the cougars and cougar x-lite,,,,not the highest priced 5ers around but they are nice.

If you can find a Chateau by General Coach on a lot somewhere, that would be a nice unit. I remember them making a few nice units with low pin weight up until they stopped producing that line-up last year.
