I have had Directv for a long time. The price just keeps going up and up. I am considering changing to Dish. Someone told me that Dish was more difficult to set up each time. Has anyone had experience with both? Does Dish offer the distant network channel option? We fulltime and spend the winter in AZ. The summers we have been mostly spent in and around PA. How often can you change your local channel location? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

For the basic satellite service (no hi-def or local channels) Direct TV is hard to beat when it comes to setup. One satellite to zero in on and your good to go. Small round dish so its not too much stuff to carry.
Once you get into more elaborate TV viewing all bets are off.
I've struggled to help others setup Dish and in comparison, I would never consider anything other than Direct, even if it does cost me more money.

dish offers locals thru a third party, no big deal. with basic dish I carry a single LNB dish and 119 has everything I want/need. no big deal aiming a 2 lnb dish. most of the whining you heard about the big deal it was was from direct folks. sort of funny now that Direct has 5 lnb jobbies and suddenly it is no big deal.

In March we switched back to Dish (lower price and for Versus channel).
Got extra dish for 5vr for $20 from installer. This HD dish is only a couple inches larger than the one we used on Directv (2 sat's to lock in). New dish has 3 sat's to lock in.
This dish fits in basement, with a little maneuvering. Took trial run at favorite campground. Per instructions from Dish tech svcs, I located middle sat (119) then rotated skew until 110 and 129 came in. Not any more difficult than previous Directv dish, which was standard def.

I don't think you will find Dish any cheaper over the long run, after promo specials have been used up, and their price is going to increase just like DirecTV, cable and everything else. We have been DirecTV subscribers for more than 10 years and are very happy with it.

Dish is cheaper even after promotions. I've had both and my Dish always comes out cheaper. Plus you can have one DVR Receiver and use it on 2 tv's vs using directv and having to have a receiver for each TV.

DIRECTV is definitely more expensive for us, "all things" equal. I haven't had them a year yet and an quite unhappy with there billing practices and adjustments. Both are pretty easy to set up, once you get used to doing it. I'd say DIRECTV, for us, is much simpler, ESPECIALLY, with our locals on the same satellite as everything else. We have the roof mounted dish, and when blocked, we pull out the little 18" dish in a "suitcase" from Winegard - the little dish also works very well, although a bit "twitchy" to align. (I should add, we do use a meter at the dish to align the portable - that's what makes it so easy to align)

I think for most people Dish is just slightly cheaper than Direct TV. I got an additional $10/month off my Direct TV for 24 months because I had AAA insurance. So I went with Direct. When the 2 years was up, so was my AAA discount. I called and asked to have my service discontinued. Surprise, surprise, I QUALIFIED for a different $10 discount for another year. I fully intend to call and threaten to drop them next year as well. I'll give odds I qualify for another year of discounts.

Thank you all for the discussion. We haven't ventured into getting a Sat yet (we rely on cable at CG or antenna) but this is good information for me to think about.
