Well, thanks to another lowlife who chose to dump his animals at a lake...my parents have a new rescue.
My in-laws trapped her in a livetrap. They do not let stray cats hang around their property. We happened to stop by there that day before they "took care of her". I could tell she was a tame cat, not a feral one. A little bit of crying, and I got permission to release her, hoping she would run off. She didn't. She was so skinny. Her whiskers were all curled up on one side where she got too close to a heat source. (Maybe a burn barrel searcing for food?) She was so sweet though, even after being in a trap all day long. I already have 6 cats at my house, so I knew I was maxed out. Thankfully my parents agreed to let me bring her out to their house to live as an outside cat. (They are out on 100 acres, and their cat population was down to 3.) I think my mother was a bit hesitant because it had been less than a month since she had lost our childhood cat that was 17 years old.
Had a bit of an accident on the way home. While I was in Cisco at the lake, I changed out of my good clothes that I had worn that morning and into some comfy clothes. The cat was content to just sleep in the floorboard most of the way home. We had to stop by Proctor for my husband to do some irrigation work. While there, the cat went to the backseat of the truck. He didn't want her there, so he reached back, picked her up, and put her back in my lap. I said thank you, and then we were both overcome with the stench of poop. I guess the potted meat they had used to trap her was finally catching up to her. Not solid, not liquid, that in between consistency poop was now on the cat, on my pants, on my top, on the seatbelt, and even in my hair!!! That was the longest 2 minutes trying to find a place where we could pull off the road. We pulled into one of the pecan orchards and hopped out. Decided to wash the cat first. Luckily, we had plenty of bottled water and the blue shop paper towels. Got her cleaned up pretty good and heard a dog yapping. And then comes the man from down the road to see if we were having any trouble. Explained that the cat had gotten sick on us. DH talked to him while I finished cleaning everything up the best I could (DH does the irrigation in that field, so the neighbor knew his truck). I was so glad that I had a change of clothes. DH held the cat while I did some stealthy changing in the front seat. A few months ago, DH had left his door open at work and a tom cat had hopped in and marked his seat. We had bought some stuff for that, and luckily it was still in the truck so I was able to use that on the seat belt. Everything else went into a trash bag.
Finally made it to my parents’ house. Thought we might have to keep her penned up for the night, but after just a little bit, it was obvious she was very content. We introduced her to the dogs and told them she was okay to stay and not to try to chase her off. Showed her where food and water was. The next day my dad called me and told me that she had followed him all around while he fed the animals and watered the garden. We stopped by later and when we pulled up, she was curled up in a wicker chair on the porch beside my parents who were in the swing. They said she had spent a lot of time in their laps. They had a water leak, and while my mother and I were preparing lunch, she sat beside them and watched them repair the leak.
She won’t let the goats get too close, but she will follow my parents around in their pen. She lets anyone pick her up and just goes limp. Very talkative and loves to be around people. No one would ever guess that she had not lived all her life on their farm. Guessing she is probably pregnant, but my mother said she would either take care of that next week or maybe even let her have the kittens. (Want to get her a tiny bit healthier before a surgery – she was skin and bones.)
Here are a few pics of her. Mother and I were calling her Sasha, my dad thought it was Shasta, and it may even get changed again. So here is kitty:
These were taken yesterday.
We had loaded up a mattress to bring home:

You know, my parents said no more inside cats. They have one now that the let in and out. I actually got her as a Christmas present my senior year of high school. (ugh, guess that means she is almost 14). We were inseperable for a few years until I decided to switch majors and had to go to a different college. (I had been living at home and going to a local college.) Even though I was home almost every weekend, she became distant, and more my mother's cat than mine. I moved back after one semester and it was still never the same. Final straw came when my husband moved in (just a fiancee then). They didn't get a long and she hated me. So, when we got married and moved out, she stayed as my mother's cat. My parents are wanting to build a new house, but do not want pets inside it, so the general consensus was to wait until there were no more inside pets. Chloe is the last one left...
BUT, part of me wonders if Ms. Sasha won't become a housecat at least part of the time when the weather gets a bit cooler...
** Funny story - My parents have a dog named Cody and a beagle named Cameron. *Cameron is actually a dog that we took in several years ago. She would not hunt, so she was passed around for a while before DH's grandmother took her in. Then she decided she didn't want to risk falling over her and didn't want her any more. I grew up with a beagle, and we had the room, so we took her instead of letting them 'discard' her. We kept her a year or so and then my parent's beagle, Sydney, passed away. They other dog, Cody, was heartbroken. He would cheer up so much when we would take Cameron to visit that eventually we decided she would be better with him. It worked out for everyone.* Back to the dogs - Cameron is a bit of a pest, and likes to try to eat Cody's food. Beagles like to eat! So, he has gotten to where he will guard his food from her. The other day, my mother decided to give Cody a bit of cat food as a treat since she had been giving it to Sasha pretty regularly. She put some down and he started eating. Sasha came up to him and he just used his head to move her away. It didn't phase her and she came right back. They said Cody looked puzzled for a minute or so and then they finished up the food together, eating out of the same dish. Like I said, you would think this cat had been born on this property.
It amazes me that she is not afraid of noises. We were in the garage and she was sitting on the riding lawnmover. The Mule is parked right next to it and she didn't even flinch when he started it up and backed it out!

From the pics of Sasha, I would say she looked healthy. The little dips at eh hips shows she is not really thin and is doing okay. Looks like a great companion.

Yes, she has filled out some just in the week or so that she has been here. Now she just looks like a skinny cat, not an unhealthy one.

Oh, lord, it was bad!! And with it being in my hair and on the seat belt, it was hard to escape it. I didn't blame the cat - she had been seen for a few weeks so was probably getting by on grasshoppers and then to go to a can of tuna and a can of potted meat...I'm sure it did a number on her system! Thankfully, once I took a quick shower, I could no longer smell it on me. And the next day when we got in the truck, the cleaner had done its job and it smelled fine as well. To be on the safe side, I washed the clothes twice before drying

I just keep looking at that nice mattress, thinking of the potted meat, whew! That was a close one! She is a beautiful kitten with tons of personality. It's so amazing when they know they are in a good place. Cat food=not good for dogs, though. It has too much protein and can be bad for their kidneys. Glad you didn't fall far from the tree and have pet-loving parents, how neat! Pretty cool DH, too! P.S. I think she looks like a Shasta Daisy.
