I had to call Linksys tech support last night. Besides selling me a new router, he was trying to sell me Computer Optamization for $199 for one year. He claimed that this would clean up my old XP computers so they would run like new. Is this for real? I use AVG free and Spybot to keep things running fairly well. Thanks

Not worth the money. Sounds like you already take care of it yourself.

Just use the built in disk cleanup and deframent program found in your system.
If you want an excellent tool to really clean up then use "wincleaner". Inexpensive and quite effective.
To really increase your speed upgrade your Ram. XP really runs well on 500 mb of ram.

Ditto.
These "optimization things" work really great for making the seller money and not much else.

+1, if you need to clean up something use the built in tools or a free program like CC Cleaner

Run Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup and tell it top get rid of your temp files. You will see a much bigger improvement than using anything that claims it will gain you speed by cleaning your registry.

There are a couple things you can do to help yourself - and they are free.
CCleaner - a program that cleans up cache files, bad registry entries, usused files, etc
CCleaner
Glary Disk Utilities - same thing
Glary Disk Utilities
Run one of these every few days.
Reboot your PC, your modem and your router (if you use one) - daily would be good
And as magicbus suggests, disk clean up, defrag and you can run chkdsk /f from a cmd or DOS window.

I have tried several computer optimization products in the past.
Here is the sequence of how I do it:
First, make a full back up of the computer using Acronis True Image
Then install the computer optimizer
Then try to run all my apps.
Then do a "RESTORE" from the disc image I made in step 1 cause the optimizer did more damage than good.
With one exception that was every one of them
That one exception is more a clean up than a optimizer, it's CCleaner and it's free. However, the "Default" is about one step from "Do Nothing" but it is very knowledgeable user configurable.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

With Glary, you can configure the clean-up routines separately, then use the 1-click feature to run them all when needed or you can run each separately. I switched from CCleaner to Glary about a year ago.
The bottom line is there isnt too much you can do to improve performance of your pc short of adding more memory.
But keeping your PC cleaned up will help. Program defaults (Firefox, IE, CCleaner, Glary, etc) are just the developers suggestion to get you started. It is up to you to learn and understand how to customize your system clean-up routines.
Individual routines runable by the 1-click feature:
- Registry Cleaner
- Temporary Files Cleaner
- Shortcuts Fixer
- Tracks Eraser
- Startup Manager
- Spyware Remover
(the other items are checked just like the temp files cleaner in the actual program)

You will be notificd when updates are available for download.
It is difficult to really determine just how efficient any of these programs are without exhaustive testing, but if it does 80%, its worth running to me.
