Have an RV for sale. Believe we have found a buyer. They are wanting to test drive it. My insurance company and lender both advise against it. Is this common? Uncommon? Thank you in advance for your advice.

The buyers insurance is supposed to cover him when he's test driving a private parties vehicle. If I couldn't test drive the RV, I would have zero interest in buying it.

Eric,
That is news to me. All states are different and some do not require vehicle owners to have insurance. Here in NYS, I carry extra insurance incase I have a accident with a un-insured motorist for out of state. But if the guy doing the road testing does have vehicle insurance, the seller could always "try" to go after it. But no guarantee of winning. His insurance carrier is only obgligated to him, not the owner of the vehicle he is driving!

If You have a Vehicle for Sale that I am interested in purchasing I will be Test driving It!

If It Isn't insured as the Potential Buyer, My position is "That's Your Problem"

First I'm really suprised you even asked your Ins.co. or lender.
People test drive all kinds of vehicles all day long with no problems. Anyone you authorize to drive your vehicle is covered by your insurance. And as long as you pay your payment your lender shouldn't and probably doesn't care what you do with your rig. They only care when you stop paying...

I agree with most of the above-I'd never buy without a drive!
Definitely make sure they have a drivers license and insurance.

I think I'd take them for a ride to demonstrate your unit-pull over someplace safe and let them take over for a bit-and then swap bag to bring the rig home...

I'll throw my vote to the test drive side also. I can't imagine buying a vehicle without trying it.

Would YOU buy a motorhome that you never test drove?

Sounds like you need new insurance and maybe a new bank my insurance covers any license driver so the most important thing probable do they have a current drivers license I'm with the no test drive I wouldn't even go look at it. must be hidding something.

Another vote for letting him test drive it. I would never buy a motor home I hadn't personally test driven. I walked away from a unit I liked several years ago because the owner took me for a test ride, but wouldn't let me drive the coach myself. You can't tell how it drives without driving it.

Did your insurance company specifically say your coach is not insured if you let someone else drive it, or did they just "recommend against" letting someone else drive? There is a big difference.

You should definitely go with the potential buyer on the test drive. It's also a good idea to make a copy of the buyers drivers licence and certificate of insurance on their car, look them over to make sure they are current, and put them somewhere safe in case there is a problem.

Excellent points, I guess I made a big assumption. I have State Farm and it covers all vehicles I drive. If I rent a moving truck, it's covered, if I test drive a motor home it's covered however if I test drove one from a dealer their insurance coveres it. I got into an argument at U-Haul becuase they were insisting I buy their insurance, I told him his insurance was a scam, if my insurance didn't cover me why is the U-Haul insurance "optional"?? It would have to be required.

I called State Farm and my previous insurance guy at Prudential and both said my insurance covers my rental of any U-Haul or rental truck.

If the person drives your RV he assumes responsibility for any damage done but agreed, the owner would have to win the case.
