Recently there was a topic called Hauling Firewood that wound up becoming a discussion on some states banning bringing in firewood from outside sources. Today on the Popular Woodworking an article was published discussing the loss of the American Elm, the American Chestnut, the fight to keep the Ash trees and now seven states are having problems with thousand cankers in the Black Walnut caused by a tiny beetle.
Right now much of the Midwest has these bans on, and with this development of another beautiful and useful tree under attack, 7 more states,Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and California, will be included in firewood bans.
We have all seen what forest fires will do and the devastation left behind, but the forest can renew itself over time. With the devastation left behind by the diseases caused by these insects there is little chance of a forest recovering itself with the same species.

Our FORMER camping buddy and I would get into a heated debate over this subject. He swore that it was a ploy by the CG to get us to buy their firewood. I even printed articles from the Pennsylvania Dept of Agriculture website and he would still stick to his view. I refused to carry any of his wood on our jaunts to Gettysburg...this is one of the reasons he is now a FORMER buddy !

In NY there is a limit of 50 miles unless the firewood is kiln dried.

Take a look at this cute little guy The Emerald Ash Borer. Right now he is very close to were I live. Was first discovered in Detroit. Some of the finest baseball bats used in the major leagues come from the area where I live. If that little guy gets into the Northern Ash trees here, that will be the end of the quality Northern Ash baseball bat! Tell that to every one who thinks the bans are jokes. Tell them no more wooden baseball bats that they use to play ball with!

I will never understand any campers reluctance to this, when even industry supports the steps being taken that also cost them much more to try and preserve this resource…

Yup and I know that it is enforced when crossing the border, it's one of the main search items now.
I get all my firewood from a cutter about 2 miles from our seasonal site at very reasonable prices.

Bad news for me - most of the trees around my house are ash!

Where we camp is in the same county as we live and you are allowed to move wood in that area, but also a local Fire Dept.(Volanteer)comes in the camp ground (Army Corp. Eng.)and sells a HUGE wheel barrow load for 10.00 bucks, easily get 2-3 fires out of it,and it raises money for the FD.,(wonder where they get it?)So we usually just buy theirs.
