Presently I have a bumper pull TT which has a exterior height of 10'7". Within the next month I am going to build a building to store my TT in. My question is, in the future if I decide to change to a fifth wheel will a 12' overhead door be tall enough for most 5th wheels, or should I go with a taller door. Thanks in advance.

I was looking for inside storage for my 5ver which is 12' 11" high. I found a guy who had just installed roll-up doors, but only 12' high. His buddy told him that no one had trailers taller than 12'. Needless to say, I had to look elsewhere. Some of the full height bedroom trailers are higher than 12'. Some are higher than 13' with the 2nd A/C unit. Also a 13' door does not give you a 13' openeing either.

Yes, you need a taller roll-up door. Most 5th wheels are around 12'6", but many are even taller.
When I built my building, I went with a 14' roll up door, which is the opening size, but be aware, you need to allow for an additional 24" or so above the opening for the housing and mechanics of the roll up door. This required a 16' "ceiling height" in mine.

Mine's 13'5". But there are some that are not as tall. I love it being that tall because I don't ever bump my head anywhere.

I have a shop building that has a 11'11" door opening. I only found a few new 5th wheels that would fit. Of them only two would meet the other requirements I had. I ended up with a Cruiser 5th wheel that is 11' 9.5". But as time goes on they get taller (trailers). Cruiser dropped the model I purchased.
Bottom line install a 14ft building. Some buildings I looked at when building had 12' doors but had only 11' clearance because of the space used when the door is open. My builder used a 14 rafter spacing at the door end to allow room for the door to tuck up between the rafters thus giving me the full 11"11" clearance.

5th wheels come in low profile, mid profile, and high profile. I don't know that there is any kind of industry wide standard that defines the height range of each. You can sometimes tell just by looking from the side at the difference in height, especially the low profile models as they have a nearly flat roof line. You can really tell when you stand up in the bedroom, especially if you are tall.
I don't think you will find a high profile 5th wheel that will fit under a 12' door. Mine is over 13'.
If you don't mind giving up bedroom ceiling height, you might find a mid profile 5er that will fit.

Yes you will need a higher door if you are considering any kind of fifthwheel later. Ours is 12' 6". That's at the top corner of the airconditioner.
I think I would go for a door nearly 14 feet, as some are in the high 13 foot tall or so.

There is a standard. It's put out by D.O.T. 13'6".
If you put in a door with a 14' opening then you can get almost anything in it.

This is on the $$$. Street legal height is 13'6". If you put a 14' door on, anything street legal will fit. This will put your ceiling height at 16' to give enough room for the track bend.
