Another thing that can be done (in a pinch) is to remove the gears, and sand them down just a little (less than 1/32"). The swelling occurs across the width of the gear, not the circumference. Just take a piece of sandpaper, lay it on a flat surface, and rub the gear on the sandpaper in a figure-8 pattern (evens out the sanding marks, if any). Then re-install the old gears.

I have the EZ8-RV pump and the gears were swelling across their width as stated. I was replacing my pump and hooked the old pump (removed and on my work bench) to a 12vdc source and nothing (just sparks). Then I removed the cover over the gears and it worked great and I could see the scoring inside the cover. Sanding the gears or possibly even adding a thin gasket to the gear cover could make all the difference needed.

My FP12 failed recently and found this thread while doing a search. I have had little luck finding the parts locally as well. Can someone post the contact info of where you found the parts so I can do the same.

Thanks

Ditto for the GPI EZ8-RV pump. I sanded the gears but want to keep a spare set on hand.

Their website lists the overhaul kit as part # 13750005 http://catalog.gpi.net/item/fluid-transf......../pn-9542?&plpver=1001&bc=1097|1308|1234y but with no means to buy it. Great customer service GPI.

Did you call GPI @ 1-800-835-0113

You just sand the ends to make it a little less wide at the outside of the plastic gears?

Dumb question for you that have serviced the pump before. Mine is locked up and I plan on replacing the gears. But, to get me through my next trip, I plan on sanding the gears. When I remove that cover, how much gas will come out? Do I need to pinch off the lines first or will I just lose a bit into a bucket and then be good to go?

Thanks for the info on sanding down the gears.

Saved me a trip to the repair shop. I measured the gear and they were .755 and I figured they should be at .750. Sanded them down got them just under .748.

Pump working great now.

Just thinking how much it would have cost me in fuel alone just to go to the service center 150 mile round trip.

I first loosened the 4 bolts holding the gear and the pump did not leak but did start pumping. That told me it was the gear swell as others have found.

The permanent fix is bronze gears. Which would probably make that pump $450.00 instead of $265.00. At least it is repairable.

Here is a breakdown of the GPI EZ8 pump.

An easy way to quickly get your pump running would be to loosen the 4 bolts (#2 in diagram) on the end cap that has GPI cast into it. It takes a standard 1/2 wrench or socket. Just loosen it enough to break them loose. The o-ring should not leak unless you loosen too much. If your pump starts working you need to sand your gears.

I had some 220 grit drywall open mesh paper and used it on a steel table. It took more pressure to remove material than I thought it would. You can sand some off and refit gears and try it to see if it works with the bolts tight. It does not take long to remove the gears once you get to the motor. Just watch for the small key (#17 in diagram) that drives the gear off the motor.
