We are leaving Whitehorse tomorrow and are wondering if the bears are fishing in the river yet. We were too late the last time we were in Alaska, so we hope to catch them this time.

Someone on another post indicated that the Pink and Silver runs in Valdez are running late this year. Hyder may be the same too.

We were there on the 22nd of July, no bears. were there over 5 hours at different times of the day. We were told 3 weeks before they would show up. There were very few salmon in the river when we were there.

We were there today, the Chum started coming up the river yesterday and there were a number of fish in the river today. We saw two black bears and saw two different hunting techniques one worked and the other needed some practice. I was hoping to see Grizzlies but to see a bear catch a fish is wonderful, regardless of the species. Driving back to our campsite we saw a sow and small cub on the road side, so all in all a good day.

We get a report daily from a photographer friend who is there every summer. We have only made it 5 summers, and not this year.

"Nice day today -- overcast and cool. Monica walked the creek pushing salmon ahead of her -- so there are now 30+ salmon in front of the playpen. Yesterday afternoon Mira and cub were at their spot about 1 to 1 1/2 k towards town from the platform. She had caught a salmon crossed the road and was eating it up on the hill side. A wolf was seen checking out the south end of the platform today. Like all past wolf sightings the wolf was visible for about 15 to 20 seconds."

Most of the regular brown bears are named. Monica had triplets 3 years ago but none this year. Mira is another regular.

"If you think you can when you can't, you just might!"

No RV yet but getting closer! We are too old for this tent stuff!
