Next up was three nights in Whitehorse. We chose to stay at the Takhini Hot Springs about half an hour north of downtown Whitehorse. It was nice, but it's more of a warm pool then the natural setting you find at Liard Hot Springs. Also, not having a washroom in our camper we rely on the facilities the campground has to offer. The outhouses here were the worst we encountered on our trip, enough said.

We made a trip to the Beringia Centre up by the airport. Very interesting displays of ice age animals and people. Also got to try our hand at the atlatl, an acient hunting weapon.

Finally got to use our golf clubs we had been hauling around for close to two weeks. Rob, Jamie and Danny played 9 holes Friday night at the course on the highway, Meadow Lake and then got in 18 holes strarting Saturday morning at the Mountain View Course. Mountain View was much more forgiving for our games. Weather stayed nice during our visit.

What a nice set of family pictures to share and the updates on how great the entire trip is going.

I couldn't resist to share a few pictures on how much I really enjoyed visiting Hay River in Aug 2008, a place you call home.....

My introduction to the Northwest Territories for the first time was being surrounded by 30 people that told me I had to go to their Petitot Gathering Pow Wow since I was already invited without really knowing it....When 30 First Nations tell you to go, even though it was still 95km away at the time....you better go.

So I went and stayed for 3 hours and glad I did, I told someone my dog was actually a toilet water buffalo when asking me what kind is it, then everybody else wanted to pet the toilet water buffalo, so she became well known.

Visited Ft. Liard, Ft. Simpson, Ft. Providence, Yellowknife, Hay River, Wood Buffalo Nat'l Park, and everything in between, then thru Alberta way before linking up to mile 0 of the Alaska Hwy before heading back home.

The Northwest Territorial Parks and Campgrounds were the cleanest and most upkept parks I had ever seen, every one of them.

The Northwest Territories was the most adventurous trip I had ever taken and loved it.

AKsilvereagle,

Thanks for your comments and photos of Hay River. Your kind words about Northwest Territories Parks are correct, they are usually very clean and well maintained.

I can tell you the price of gas is way down from your Aug 2008 trip. It's around 109.9 per litre in Hay River now.

Here's some more on our trip this month to the Yukon and Alaska;

After leaving Whitehorse we drove to Haines Junction and that's where we started to hear that the Top of World Highway was closed due to wash outs. We weren't sure how long the closure would be so we dicied to press on hoping it might open.

Our next night of camping was at Lake Creek Yukon, between Klune Lake and Beaver Creek. We did notice that the river level was fairly high here and on our back through a couple days later the campground was closed because of it.

We drove to Beaver Creek, where I got my Youkon passport stamped. I did end up getting 20 stamps and we're in the drawn for 5 ounces of gold!

The road from Klune Lake to Beaver Creek was really bumpy due to frost heaves. It reminded us of the highway between Rae-Edzo and Yellowknife, only worse. Allow lots of time for this section.

We camped at the Tundra RV camp in Tok and did a day trip to Chiken which was the turn around point in our trip due to the TOW Highway being washed out.

We stayed at Tundra....twice! We thought it was a nice campground. Chicken was cute too. Can't imagine how the road closures are hurting businesses and life up there and beyond. We met a nice family that was running that little outside cafe at Chicken. Their little boy befriended us right away! Can't remember his name, but their dog is Nation.

We met the lady at Downtown Chicken, I think her name is Susan. She was very friendly, but did say she is losing alot of money because of the bus tours not coming through. She usually gets between 50 to 100 people a day or so. Pretty hard to miss out on that business during the short season.

Our next camping site was back in the Yukon at Lake Lebarge;

After Lebarge we spent 3 nights at the Drury Creek campground on Little Salmon Lake on the Campbell Highway. We really enjoyed this beautiful location and had our best weather of the trip.

Sue T.,

Wanted to get these pictures on here because you were asking about our drive on the South Canol.

After brief stops in Faro and Ross River we enjoyed this less travelled highway in our minivan. Average speed was about 20 km per hour and the camper got pretty dusty inside, but well worth it.

Here's where we camped for the night, Quiet Lake, which was true to it's name.

Same spot you used Sue T.

Where the Canol Road meets the Alaska Highway near Johnson's Crossing. Lots of interesting information about the history of the Canol project can be found here and well worth a stop.
