Hello All,
Our family of five just completed a trip with some friends from Alberta. We drove most of the Alaska Highway between Dawson Creek and Tok Alaska. We camp in a pup. We did side trips to Skagway, Chicken and toured the central Yukon including a trip on the South Canol.
We travelled between June 29 and July 23, 2010. We met our friends in Fort Nelson, BC for Canada Day. Anyone who was there can tell you what a wash out that was due to the rain. Rain also washed out our plans to do the Top of The World Highway to Dawson.
I'll submit some photos over the next little while. Thanks to Sue T. for some travel and camping advice, it was very helpful.
Our first night on the road was Beatton Provincial Park just north of Fort Saint John, BC. Here's a couple of pics.

For Two Nights we stayed at the RV Camp at the west end of Fort Nelson next to the museum. It's called the Triple G Hideaway. We stayed in the tenting area. Most of the time we tried to camp in government campgrounds where ever we could.
All of the outdoor activities for Canada Day were cancelled due to rain, but the local High School had an indoor carnival.

Jamie ... glad your trip went well, all things considered. We are nearing our departure date and closely watching the status of the Top of the World Highway. Very unfortunate that it washed out your plans to go across.
Sure hope you took the time to enjoy the good pizza at Fast Eddie's in Tok!
Can't wait to see you pics of the South Canol! It's a lovely area. Not as majestic as the North Canol but a much easier drive!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback.
After Fort Nelson our next stop for two nights was Muncho Lake, BC. The weather was rainy when we arrived, but improved just before we left. Had a pretty hard time cooking steaks in the rain the first night. Pop up camping in rain presents challenges as well.
Still a very beautiful spot and a farorite of some our group. It was great that we had a canoe. Fishing was very slow.

What's a trip on the Alaska Highway without a stop at Liard Hot Springs?

Our Next stop was the Yukon Government Campground at Squanga Lake. It's about 20 kms west of Johnson's Crossing. We were going to use it as a jumping off point for a side trip to Atlin, but everybody was a little tired of all the travel and the weather was nice so we decided to just spend our time at Squanga.
My friend Rob caught a Northern Pike and I was able to land a whitefish on a spinner for the first time since I was a kid. We ate the jack. The kids enjoyed the water. Great, relaxing couple of days.

Three of the kids are mine and the other two are my friends, but yes they were all pretty happy most of the time .
Next up was three nights in Skagway Alaska. We almost didn't make it in because we didn't have proper vaccination papers for our dog and they seized our peppers we had in the camper. They let us through, but said we better have our dogs paperwork next time, so I got him up to date in Whitehorse a few days later.
Skagway is a very beautiful and interesting place. Very quiet in the evenings after the cruise ships depart. Lots of gold rush history every where you look.

Here's a shot of me, my wife and three kids in the White Pass north of Skagway. The area is like Canadain Shield surrounded by mountains.
