We are leaving from Sarnia - Aug.9 to travel to Sault Ste Marie Canada to start the Lake Superior Circle Tour. We have checked and many of the PP parks are booked on the weekends. We are looking for suggestions for private campgrounds. I do have a list but we would especially like to hear about personal experiences. We have checked rvparkreviews. We are travelling with a 32 foot 5th wheel, DH, DW and DD. Thanks

Wife & I just returned from a trip around Lake Superior in June. Some of the places we stayed at that I would recommend are:

Glen View CG, North side of Sault Ste. Marie, ON;

Pukaskwa National Park, half way between Wawa,ON and Marathon, ON, on Hwy 17, right on the Lake; and

Happy Land Rv Park, West of Thunder Bay, about a mile from Kakabeka Falls

You might want to check them out. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed at:
Campark Resorts, Niagra Falls, it was nice, especially if you have children.
Foster's Fishing center, nice cg but they did not have power.
Mohawk cg, nicest guy runs the place, very helpful, lot's of permanent sites.
1000 Islands/KOA Kingston, Kingston, nice cg.
Grenville Park, Prescott, nice cg, 15 amp service.
Carol Campsite, Sudbury, it's on the main road which is convenient.
Glenview, Sault Ste Marie, nice place.
Grand Marias Municipal cg, Grand Marias, MN - great place, our second time here.

We boondocked much of the time.

Have fun!

Rebecca

On EDIT: I am so crazy, we did all the great lakes. We never had reservations.

I forgot, Pancake bay is one where you may need reservations (we didn't) as it is too close to SS Marie,

I would agree with you. We just completed our Lake Superior Tour. The provincial parks up north do not have the same problem as those down south. Neys was not full -- we only reserved to get a beach site as we were hoping that the weather would let us do some stargazing (we had brought the telescope with us).

Our tour started in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and ended in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.

On the American side we stayed at Taqhemenon Falls State Park -- state parks are interesting. They squeeze you together like sardines, but the population is there to fill the parks.

We then went to F.J. McLain State Park in the Keewenaw Peninsula. We stayed at a private campground in Duluth -- Spirit Mountain. It was not busy during the week. If you are going there, be aware that I-35 is under construction.

We then moved up to Thunder Bay and stayed at the KOA. After that, we went to Neys, Rabbit Blanket Lake in Lake Superior Park. Again, we did not need reservations for that park. You could have shot a cannon through that place. In the Sault, we stayed in the KOA but next time we might try Glenview as we have heard good things about it.

All Ontario Parks have a number of sites that are non reservable eg 15% of sites are first come first serve. If you stop by mid afternoon, you should not have any problems. As others have indicated the Northern Parks have many sites unoccupied. Also, Pukaskwa National Park as indicated do not take reservations.

Come up and enjoy the Canadian North, it is great. In the north this season, we have been to Pancake Bay, Pukaskwa, Neys, Nagagamisis, Rene Brunelle, Windy Lake - lots of room week days and weekends.
