Does one have to log out to be labeled “offline”? What if I just turn my computer off? Or put it into sleep or hibernate mode?

A related question: even though I never “log out,” any time I get or want to send a PM I have to enter my user name and password. That sounds as though I am logged out. On the other hand, I can access posters’ profiles at all times.

I don't know about the offline indicator; I've started a test to see if an inactive member changes to offline.

There is also an inactive category. The time for that is determined by a setting on your preferences page. It is use to determine when the New Post icon should be used.

The forum as always had an occasional login for private messages. I don't know what triggers it, but you might notice that, unlike clicking on the login link, this one is not secure; ie, SSL is not used and the URL starts with http instead of https.

Anyone can access profiles, even those who are not members can access member's profiles.

Before making my previous post, I logged in with my "test member" account, using a different portal, and left it logged in.

Just now, I logged in on this account; my buddy list showed that the test account was offline. Opening the other portal, I could see that the test account was still logged in.

Apparently, the "offline" indicator is based on the preference setting for Reset last visit. I believe that is as it should be. That is, if your account is inactive for the specified amount of time, it is listed as offline.

Thanks, Tom. Makes sense to me.
