I am experiencing irregular movement on the tach needle on the instrument panel gauge. At times in drops quickly and then bounces back to the normal reading around 1500 RPM while traveling. It has also dropped to zero and stay for a few seconds and then went back to the normal reading of 1500 RPM.
Also when I press in and hold the reset button on the odometer gauge, the RPM needle drops to zero and holds until I release the odometer gauge button. Any suggestions on where to start looking for the problem. All other gauges are workin o.k. including the volts and oil pressure on the same cluster gauge. Appreciate any suggestions.

Some info would be needed to even start to dx the problem - such as what vehicle is this on? On newer vehicles the tach is controlled by the computer and guage problems are just as likely to originate in the vehicle's computer network as in the guage itself. (don't want to make the assumption it's the vehicle in the signature).
If it is the vehicle in the signature, the tach is probably controlled by the computer and not like the older ones that were fully self contained and measured things like spark pulses, etc.

This may have changed. Some vehicles were setup to get their tach signal off of the alternator. Why?? Who knows?? Anyhow when the battery was charged up and the Alternator was not needed it would cut out and come back on looking for a job to do. If there was no need for it, it would cut out again and so on. Two gauges frequently would flutter. The volt meter was affected and the tachometer was the other one affected. When you have this situation again turn on the park and clearance lights. Usually this is enough of a load (job) to keep the alternator occupied and steady the gauges. If this does the job for you it is quite likely that the tach at least will also register more accurately.

In response to the type of vehicle, the problem is on a 2004 Endeavor with the Cummins C engine, diesel.
