I'm with you on this one cause I was stupid last week. Backing into our site in a state park that I know is tight, I ignored the thought to run the slider back cause I can get in anyway. I did, but the cut was a bit too sharp and I put the trailer into the corner of the cab. Got to keep the body shop busy you know.

ib516 The problem you experienced with dropping your rig may one that a bed saver may not have help. But for many others it will help. I for one have had the experience and also many others. When you hear of $5,000 dollars of damaged resulting from a dropped rig. $200.00 is cheap insurance. I had a similar experience as yours. I parked on a slight incline and got out of sequence in setting up. Pulled the release on the hitch and helplessly watch the rig slide backwards. It fell right into the bed saver. Am I a believer. Yes I am. To err is human.

"I already have a new (used) tailgate ($200) good thing white ones are easy to find. Now I need a $400 new rear window, and a $700 insurance deductable for the hail damage to the truck, and a $50 deductable for the hail damage to the RV, then a new wheel for the sewer tote, and all will be back to normal after I get all the repairs done. $1350 if my math is right. It's expense to be an idiot."

You shoud give serious consideration to changing your "ID" to:

"ib_Joe_Btfsplk"

*If* you're not old enough to remember the characters in the "Lil Abner" comic strip - - try a Google on: Lil Abner characters.
(Joe tops the list, LOL!)

~
UNfortunately - you made "poster boy" for:
Spray painting hitch jaws
Blue Ox Bedsaver
Slider hitch
Roto Chocks (or "Bal", or?)
Inexpensive tailgate ("V" gate - Northern Tool)
Pre-flight checklist

The hail damage = there was *no* help for Joe either.

Things are bound to get better!

Trailer wouldn't have rolled if chocked properly. Suggest you purchase Rotochoks or similar.

Well thanks, but I had removed the chocks as I thought it was hitched up.

This is probably a stupid question and I am new to a 5er, but how are the rigs getting dropped on trucks? I don't want to make the same mistakes. I'm so nervous about it now that I am triple and quadrouple checking things already.

So long as you remain as diligent as you are, now, you'll probably never drop your fiver. Just don't let anything distract you when your hitching or unhitching. If you are distracted, start the process over from the beginning.
The only trailer I've ever had come off the hitch was a pontoon boat trailer. The safety chains kept it from being a disaster. It was entirely my fault. Someone else had hitched it up for me, but I failed to double check it.

My method:

Hitch, lock drawbar, lift legs until they are just off the ground, manually lock trailer brakes with brake controller and pull test - EVERY TIME.

THEN remove wheel chocks and lift landing gear. If inturrupted, start from beginning and redo all checks. If it comes off, it will only drop an inch or so.

For unhooking, wheel chocks first every time, no matter how level you think the spot is, then landing gear, then unlock drawbar, then pull drawbar. I never unlock before i'm ready to pull the handle.

p.s. don't let drunk know-it alls help guide you into a tight spot. Don't ask how I know, but I now need a sticker for under my exterior light.

This is a "BTW" to my previous post:

Don't know the details or source . . . . . but -

" . . new (used) tailgate ($200) good thing white ones are easy to find"

Literally SHOUTS: *Buyer Beware* !!
