You may have provided a valuable learning experience for someone watching. Several years ago, at a family reunion with several hundred in attendance, my cousin dropped his new 5er on his new Ford pick-up. I've never forgotten and ALWAYS crawl under and look to see if my hitch is locked before I pull.

On dropping the trailer, I was making a quick jaunt to the dump station to empty the black tank. Wife was helping, and I backed into the kingpin and felt a nice solid thunk. Then I forgot to check that the hitch bar was actually latched. I was lifting the landing gear and watched helplessly as the RV ever so slowly slid backwards off the hitch as the tires rolled off of the wood chunks I had used to level it side to side, and landing gear raised off the ground. The back of the 5er pin contacted the tailgate before the bottom of the 5er's "shelf" contacted the bed rails. The bending of the tailgate slowed the 5ers decent and it rested gently on the rails. No damage to 5er beyond some slightly bent mouldings, and no damage to the truck's bed rails. The tailgate was U shaped though. I had to remove it and jump on it to straighten it out enough to be able to open and close it. Due to the short distance between the 5ers pin box and the tailgate, a bed saver wouldn't have helped, and they don't make Megacabs in a longbed from the factory. So I'll stick with what I have. If I use my head, it'll work just fine.

Luckily, I was able to raise the 5er back up by using the landing gear and hitch it up properly for the trip to the dump station.

Oh, and it has actually been a TRIPLE disaster if you count the thousands of dollars in hail damage the truck and RV got before we even reached the campground. Golf ball sized hard ones, comin' in fast and hard. I honestly thought the windshield was going to shatter. I don't know how it didn't. I fully expected broken roof vent covers and side windows in the RV, but they stood up to the hammering. I have "bruises" on the roof vents (white spots in the otherwise clearish plastic), and a bent TV antenna, and several small dents in the tin trim that wraps around from the side to the bottom of the RV.

The truck got hammered in the fenders above the wheels, bedsides, doors, front fender, and especially the hood and roof.

Repeat after me, calm down, slow down, we are not in a big hurry. I try to start that chant in my head every time I start getting frustrated. It has worked for me, so far.

I was kinda bummed about my last trip down to Sam A. Baker State Park this week, and the bad luck I had (until I read your story). I curbed on of my TT tires pretty hard on the trip before that, and didn't notice any damage to the tire until I parked the TT in the State Park this week. Tread has a nice bulge and a crook in it, so the tire came off and on went the spare. So it's time to shop TT tires I guess. Also, on the way down to the park, we hit a bump in the highway and I heard a POP!!! A small rock chip in my front windshield decided to start spreading into a crack, that will no doubt require complete replacement of the windshield.

However, your story, sounds more expensive than mine. Sorry about your misfortune.

Because of this forum I have a hitch with a bar that goes behind the pin NOT THE JAWS that a lot of people have. My pin is painted bright orange and (of course) the hitch bar is black. After you hook up and the handle slides in and the bar goes behind the hitch that is all you need but then I still go and look to see that I see black and not bright orange.

Do yourself a favor and make a checklist. Follow every step everytime and do not allow others in the campground to talk to you while you are hitching/unhitching and you will NEVER have that problem again. Pilots have been flying for years but they also have a checklist and they do it EVERYTIME.

As far the the window get a slider hitch or you will do it again because I do not think you are going to trade the truck just for an 8 foot bed. I went with the 8 foot bed again because of the fine folks on this forum and their years of experience help me with ZERO experience when I started.

Finally slow down. My only boo boo was when I was in a hurry . I got a good scrape on the side that is getting fix in October because I was in a hurry to park (family reasons but still my fault)

Good luck with your NEXT adventure...

Hey; by the way, your not going to be anywhere near Texas in October are you? LOL...just kidding

Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck. I can't offer much help with the tailgate (unles you want to buy an inferno red one ) or the hail damage. But the first thing installed, before I even picked up my new Open Range Residential, was a 5th Airborne Sidewinder. It moves the turning point approx 23 inches to the rear. The turning point about half way between a fiver and a bumper pull, and to me it is the easiest of the three... I have to dodge a couple of dumpsters to back in to my back yard, and this hitch made it SOOOOOOO much easier. I have already turned sharper than I would even think about with the previous fiver. I haven't turned 90 degrees yet, but I have been awful close to it and no where near touching the back of my truck. BTW, I tow with a 2006 5.9L Cummins nicely wrapped in an Inferno Red Dodge 2500 Shortbed 4X4.
