Finally got some time off from work to take the new camper out. Didn't go far, maybe 1/2 a mile from the house how convenient. Everything worked great, even got the heater to work which was great since it was in the 50's. Found a water leak on the city water inlet but got that fixed up. Even fixed up an awning for us since it rained the whole time. Realized that airbags are a must, guess those old campers are heavy. Also I need to invest in some leveling blocks. Hauling all those wood blocks sucked.

Poor mans awning...

Need some better steps too.

This swing was a great investment.

You're just talking about fine tuning from here on. Your passengers look like they're enjoying the stay. Best of luck with the rig.

We've been up 3 times in the last 4 years and will go again twice in 2011. Missed this year and it's killing me. We always try to spend a few days at Elmendorf. Their FAMCAMP is great. I spent my whole career trying for an Alaskan assignment, and the best I ever got was a few hours on the ground then off again. Probably a good thing, or my kids would have all grown up in AK. Once up there, I NEVER would have left. I'll be thinking about you when the Silvers begin to run in Valdez next month.

It's been a miserable summer so you didn't miss much. I live just down the street from the FAMCAMP, drive by it every day. I guess we got lucky getting orders here, of course we came from Minot so we deserve it I think. My wife is currently trying to extend for another 3 years, but if that doesn't happen she will probably just get out and we will just stay here. Funny thing is we have lived here since July 2008 and I have yet to go salmon fishing.

Very nice! You will be finding things to add each trip out for a while until it fits all your needs. Nice looking FamCamp. My son was on base there almost 2 weeks ago, but all sites were full at main FamCamp. But he found a spot off a road somewhere on base and was allowed to spent a couple of nights there. He is on vacation (my term) or leave (his term) from Eielson AFB and stopped to buy a snowmachine in Anchorage before heading down to Seward. They have been doing a lot of fishing from Seward and Resurrection Bay to Kenai the town & on Kenai and Russian Rivers. He maybe on his way back toward Anchorage by now. Have not spoken to him today. He tows a Cougar 5th Wheel with a big blue Dodge Four Door Dually and will be towing a snowmachine behind him as he leaves Elmendorf. They also moved there from Minot, last August. They liked Minot, even better than Fairbanks. He liked the looks of Anchorage and the base there. He enjoys getting out into the outback and loves hunting and fishing. They spent the 4th July week-end in Valdez before this longer trip. He is a current Staff Sergeant. He can't wait to be able to use a net next year.

In North Dakota 2008

Enjoy your rig. It reminds me of an old truck camper we had back in the early '80s, but it was made in late '60s. Not in the best of shape, but we had some fun trips in it. About the same color scheme, but your looks much better. I took the old mattress out and burned it. Smelly. Also had many roof leaks. I remember patching the roof with tar like stuff in Taos, NM while we did laundry. I looked at some of your old posts, I found out it is an older unit as well, "An old 8' KIT camper from the 80's..." Ours was an old Holiday Rambler, more than likely a neat rig when it came off the line. Ha! For the age, your rig looks to be in really good shape. Our city hook-up leaked like a sieve, but I just left it. Didn't keep it long anyway. It was heavy for our old 15 yr old Chevy 1/2 pickup, long bed, V-8 Auto.

Haven't make it up to AK yet, but maybe next year. Should have 3 grand-daughters by then. Not sure if we want to fly into the area in Sept or Oct.

Edit PS: They had made it back home tonight. Were in Anchorage yesterday. Camped last night some where along Denali highway. His two weeks leave is over. They had a blast.

You might also look at Timbren SES. Put them on my silverado and like them much better than air bags. Camper looks nice.

Instead of all those blocks, I carry two 6x8x10 blocks and two 2x12x14 boards. With my truck being 4wd, I can put the boards up on the blocks as needed, drop it in low and then drive up to level off. This combination lets me pick up two wheels up to any combination of 12".

Of course, even with the family with me, I don't use the jacks to steady the camper. Funny thing is when I had a big fifth wheel, any movement drove me crazy. But in the TC, movements just jostles me to sleep.

Glad you had a wonderful trip. You'll find out that the short trips are sometimes better than the long, especially when you don't have any problems.
