Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

There are portable truck-based scanners at the crossing we use weekly. You are asked to leave the vehicle and stand in a waiting area while they drive the scanner truck around the vehilces; they typically scan a line of 4-6 vehicles at a time. The entire process takes about 10-15 minutes. Vehicles are selected for a scan at random.
In the past three years at crossing 1-2 times a week all summer, we were selected only once for a scan.
