Try Nu Finish car polish. I was cleaning up our Subaru today and grabbed some out of my chemical cabinet, a rag, some elbow grease and a couple minutes later the lights looked like new. No need to buy one of those expensive headlamp restoration kits. A bottle will only set you back about $8.

You just got lucky and caught it in time. Typically they take a real plastic polish/ rubbing compound, all the way up to sanding the entire surface and starting over

At $25 and up these guys are ridiculous. The NuFinish polish is a much better value and works fine, as does any fine polish.

A little wet sanding with 400, 800, 1000 and 2000 grit paper then a nice polish with a good polishing compound such as Nufinish will get even the worst headlights shiny and clear.
I did it to my Dakota with fantastic results.

I've also had excellent results using just regular polish on my lenses and it makes them look probably better than new, but........in just a couple weeks they are still clear and not hazy like many but they don't keep that brand new luster clear. But just a touch-up puts them back in shape again.

John "Ridiculous" is relative considering that a replacement fixture could run several hundred $$ each.
NuFinish is nothing but a polish and might actually work for beginning fog problems, but will not come close to touching the headlights that the Mothers foam ball works on, but it too is limited. The best of the bunch is the 3M system that comes with 3 levels of sanding and wet polish, and will refinish almost anything for $18. I've already been down this road and tried to cheap the fix, but in the end went to the 3M system to fix the problem leaving me several bottles of fancy plastic polish on the shelf.

This may sound ridiculous, but I give my headlights a nice "WAXING" every time I wax the body paint. (about twice a year). I havent had to rely on anything else to clean them yet. Of course I start doing this from day 1, so I dont wait till they fade. Maybe thats the answer, maybe Im just lucky.
