I only know the segment from Shelby to Kalispell. The road is in pretty good shape. It IS, of course, mostly 2 lane, and much of it has narrow shoulders.
There are many passing lanes when going up hills; stay to the right except when passing.
Montana law states that if you have 5 or more vehicles behind you, you must pull off at the first SAFE place and allow them to go by.
There can be severe head winds or cross winds on that stretch of road. Now and then, the wind can even be a tail wind, which is wonderful!
Have a safe trip.

There is a nice municipal CG in Ashland Wisconsin, about thirty miles east of Duluth.
If you are going up I75 to Mackinac.
Consider a side trip to Mackinac Island.

We may be also going that way this coming week, cannot make up my mind.
May drop down to-ward Ft Wayne then up through Minnisota, back on 2,
Might go across 2 then up to Winnipeg, back above Lake Superior.
Will probably commit at London On, then either cross at Detroit or Sarnia.
Life is short,Death is long,
Take a vacation.

It's a great road. We take it from Mackinac MI to Shelby each time we go and return from Alaska. They're working on making it 4 lanes for the whole length, but it'll take some years yet.

Just made that same trip in June. The highways are generally in good shape all of the way. There is road work in every state. Had about 2 miles of dirt just inside the eastern Montana border where they had us routed around a large project. I didn't have any problems finding places to stay. Call ahead the night before or in the morning. The only bad place was behind a motel in mid Montana. But, we were only spending the night so it didn't matter.

We just came home from Canada on 2 from Rugby North Dakota all the way to Superior Wisconsin. I really enjoyed the drive. It was much better than the trip up on I-94. Nice roadway. Pretty smooth and cool rest stops in North Dakota--themed to the area....
