We have been reading about the Winegard Carryout GM-1518 sat antenna. I don't want to go to a roof mount system so this one looks interesting. For those using one, how do you like it ? I'm also interested in the Pro's and Con's of the system. Also are there other similar type systems I need to know about that are also portable ?
I guess I should add that I am now using a PVC mount with sat dish for a portable use with DirecTV.

Here's a video for the Winegard Carryout that has good information on the satellite. I was interested in these automatic satellites but DW didn't want to spend that kind of money so I built a stand and used an old dish we had laying around. We have DirecTV service and it only takes a few minutes to get dialed in once you've done it a couple of times. Although we don't watch much tv when camping it is nice to have for news and weather.

We use a DirecTV dish that one of our friends discarded when going to HDTV with a PVC mount. The whole shebang cost about $20 and works very well.

I have the Carryout and really like it. Just set it out where the sky is clear to the south, plug it in and you have a signal in a couple of minutes. No looking up sat positions, aiming, etc. If you use Dish Networks you can get all their programming (SD and HD) with the small Carryout.... it will not get HD on DirecTV. HD dishs on tripods are very large and balky. I've only had it a few months but I understand that it is more susceptible to rain fade since the dish is so small. If you have multiple receivers (I only have one) you can only watch programming on the same sat with each receiver.

Has anyone heard of these getting stolen? They cost a lot of money compared to a portable dish. Also how do they work in the forest service campgrounds where there are lots of trees?

They will work as well as any dish. If you can't see the sats, you won't get a signal.
