The fact that this situation exists, bodes poorly for our justice system.

If I had done that when I was a teenager, my Dad would have kicked my butt up between my shoulder blades, and then made me go back to the house and apologize for scaring those people. That homeowner could have come out of the house with a gun.

IMO the justice system is working fine in this instance. I think the situation bodes poorly for our society when a crazy homeowner feels it is necessary to chase down and tackle someone for playing a meaningless prank.

We played doorbell ditch many times as a kid and never had anyone react in a violent way.

I place much more blame on the kid's father than on the system. If dear old dad had been doing any real parenting -- which apparently he hasn't been doing, judging from his defense of the kid reported in the article -- then the situation never would've happened. While I don't think the homeowner's actions were totally unwarranted, they do seem like a bit of an over-reaction.

I agree the system is broke. Many of the "X" generation are raising a new "Y" generation that is even worse, when it comes to violating others rights and space or flaunting the laws they don't believe in and then claiming they can do as they want. Hopefully the AG will see things as they are and charge the teen and not the homeowner. Kids learn from their parents and many of this "X" generation are as bad as they come, in teaching their children right from wrong.

How does the homeowner know the kid isn't testing to see if someone is home; and if not, coming back to rob the place?

The kid could be trespassing.

The kid didn't figure the negative consequences of his actions and a bloody lip tops off a good lesson--if it wouldn't be for his father's apparent "radical" defense.

Someone in the house could be sick, work night shift etc.--all things a teenage brain is unlikely to consider.

Let's all go over to strollin's house and play meaningless pranks.

'Round and 'round we go.... meaningless pranks committed by teenagers who's parents automatically side with their little 'angel', and homeowners who are probably tired of all the BS throughout their workday and would just like to be left alone for the evening.

The police report states that the prankster was tackled on the homeowners property. What the little angel's Dad says happened matters less than what the prankster says happened.

Fact is, you're on my property, late at night. Both front door and back door appear to have intruders attempting to make entry.

YOU, my friend, are fair game.

That situation could've been WAY worse, and the homeowner would've been within his rights.

We've all heard or read about situations like this.

I think Jim Shoe and I had the same Dad.
