Dr. Doug, correct me if I'm wrong, please, BUT a few years ago one of our cats bit my husband in the thumb. It became infected and my DH had to go to the doc's office for several days for iv antibiotics. We were told that cat saliva contains a bacteria closely related to the one that caused the plague. Being licked isn't a problem in most situations, but I'd be concerned if I had a recent cut .

I have two friends that ended up in the hospital from a cat scratch.

Our youngest daughter got cat scratch disease from some kittens the kids found under the house next door. She developed symptoms similar to mononucleosis and when we found a lymph gland greatly swollen, they put her in the hospital and knocked her out to biopsy it. Oh, that was a scary time! That kid laid on the sofa and barely moved for weeks afterwards. I don't remember her being given any antibiotics for it. Maybe they do these days. I've also had a couple of cats die of abcess from the bites of stray cats, but those, also, were years ago. None of this ever kept me from loving cats, though.

My cat likes to sleep with me. Sometimes I will wake up in pain when she has been licking the same spot on my arm or leg over and over. That is not nearly so bad as her new deal. She started licking my face while I'm sleeping. Not only does it wake me up, but I worry about germs. Sometimes it is by my eyes or lips. Scary!

Should I be worried or just be happy that she loves me so much?

we all have germs in our mouths, but people don't lick their buts before lickung your face. think about where that tounge has been.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

Stop coating yourself with butter before bed

I've got one that loves coconut oil and I rub down with that after a shower to keep my skin from coming off in this God-forsaken high desert environment. Tabs will just about wear the skin off my feet when I'm fresh out of the shower. It's great, I get all clean and then get my feet covered in cat spit just before bed! I lock her and the other juvenile delinquent up at night, though, so it isn't an issue in bed.

As far as cats using their rough tongues to remove fur from their prey, I've certainly never seen such a thing. They generally use their teeth for eating and consume hair and skin and everything but the head and a couple of internal organs. Sometimes they eat the head, too. Crunchy, I guess! They do however groom their coats with their tongues.

Cows also have very rough tongues. I got licked by a cow one time, felt like the world's biggest cat tongue.

You know, there's really quite a lot to be said for having your life turned upside down!
