I buy ours in Los Algodonas each winter. You do not need a prescription, just tell them what you want, or bring your old receipts or bottles, so they can see the names. Many foreign countries operate this way. If its a narcotic, then you will need the RX, but I have been told they have an MD. on site-not really sure if that's true. You are allowed to bring into the US a 3 month supply, each time. or at least thats what I did. 3 months for me, 3 months for hubby. Prices are great! and its name brand companies! Dona

No perscription has been needed in the past, I hear rumor that this year a perscription may be needed for antibiotics. We buy ours at Nuevo Progreso south of Weslaco Texas.

The antibiotics are pretty cheap however I am not sure about their effectiveness. A couple of years ago I have a very severe toothache and started using mexican amoxicillin for the infection. After about 5 days the pain never changed. I finally called my dentist and had him call in a prescription for amoxicilin. Within an hour after starting the new prescription the pain went away. There have been complaints over the years on bogus pharmaceuticals from the border pharmacies. The only ones that were known for sure to be good "drugs" were the ones in bubble wrap with spanish writing on the packaging. Any loose pills in bottles could be suspect.

A lot of the stuff I have price checked against only shows maybe a 20% savings against Costco Pharmacy. If you ask they will sell you something like vicodin but it wont be cheap. You will have to conceal it when going back across. Yes they will write you a prescription but I dont think its worth the paper its written on. Every now and then our border agents will have a "crack" down if they suspect too many controlled drugs are coming across. When that happens the lines get really long.

The biggest saving which might be over half is on the common asthma and emphesema medicines that are ridiculously expensive in this country.

Prescription is not needed in Mexico but US customs has a sign saying that drugs being imported must have a prescription. Not always enforced .... some times they don't even ask. I carry a photo copy of my prescription from back home. Never had a problem.

I routinely import 6 months worth of meds when I enter the USA from Canada. Never been a problem. Quite often some of those meds originated in Mexico the winter before.

I buy generic Prilosec in Nuevo Progresso -- 120 pills for $5.00. Can't come close to that in the states. My reflux is severe, and these Mexican drugs do just fine in containing it. I have crossed the border many times without a prescription.

YES it is true you now need a prescription for antibiotics. Mexican government said the Mexican people were doing too much self prescribing. So in June or July, a new requirement was put in place that a Mexican Doctor's prescription is required to purchase antibiotics. Have not been across to try since.

Drug effectiveness is the same. The same drug manufacturers operate in Mexico as in the U.S. and other countries. As Rocmoc and others have stated, there is a crackdown on antibiotics and the requirement for a prescription.

Walmart, CostCo and Sam's all offer excellent pricing and generics too. CostCo lets you purchase drugs without a membership.

I believe the change took place July 1st, so they got in under the wire. BUT you most generally will find someone in Mexico that will operate outside of the law. The risk is YOURS!
