Just as a perspective, my rv dealer installed the Blue-Ox base plates and all the wiring (including charge wire system) on my Jeep Liberty in about 4 hours. Everything works; lights, turn signals, brake lights, 4-way flashers and toad battery charging.

We installed a Demco baseplate on my 2010 CRV in 3 hours, one evening. One of guys that did much of the work is a Honda mechanic, he had the bumper off and on faster than I could read the instructions on how to do it. It would have only taken an hour but it was tough drilling the holes to fasten the baseplate. I chose to use magnetic lights on my roof to avoid the issues of splicing into the vehicle wiring. I did bury the wiring under the interior trim panels.

One of the reason I chose the Demco Baseplate is that it didn't require an alterations to the bumper or metal structure of the CRV, only drilling the holes. Roadmaster and Blue Ox required parts of the bumper to cut off or bent out of the way.

So, you didn't agree on a price up front, eh? Big mistake!

That is usually posted - hourly rate. I don't know any shops that will agree on a price up front. Even the car guys don't do that!

Baseplate installation is a standard job. There should be an agreed upon price, up front. Or at least a "not-to-exceed" quote. My dealer quoted me a fixed price to istall my tow system, it took a lot longer than anticipated and he held to his quote.

Installing a tow setup is not like diagnosing and repairing some unknown breakdown. The OP is being taken for a ride by an incompitent shop...... Only if he lets them.

Well they got the lights working this morning. they are saying that there is a module that connects to the 6 pin plug at the rear of this motor home and that the module which seperates signal was not wporking properly. They said it has 4 wires going into the module and 5 coming out to the 6 pin plug and that they can't find one anywhere like that so they have installed a 5 in 6 out module and had to connect it directly to the batteries in the side comparment as they said it requires its own power. That seems to have the lights working and they are now trying to set the brake even suystem. This shop has done previous installs on blue ox and the people i spoke with had no issues. They were having them put on cavalier so I thought that maybe it was somethimng about Honda's that was difficult. It would appear from the comments on here that is not the case. The laser cutting they said was to the metal webbing in step 9 and to the metal bumper in step 10 in the installation guide for the base plates. I did speak with them about the 3-4 hours that I was told by Blue Ox it should take to do a full install on the lights and base plates so that was what we had agreed to however given the 3 days my car has been in we'll see what they think is fair. I have yet to meet with the owner so I'll let you know later how this turns out. I'm leaving tomorrow for the Maritimes for 3 weeks so at this stage I'm hoping to get it done. I was delayed in getting this to the shop because the dealer I bought the parts from in the U.S had the light kit back ordered for 2 weeks which is why I'm scrambling to get this done last minute. I think I'll need a vacation after this!

You could call blue ox and talk to a tech rep and explain your situation with the shop owner on the line. General consensus here is that your mechanics need better guidance/experience. Is there a language problem here? Many of us amatuers have done what they are doing in a day or so.

Well that would make very quick work of it, and if one was handy....

Well I picked up the unti last evening. After meeting with the owner they agreed to withdraw 1 days worth of labour which redueced the bill. The said they had 37 man hours tied up in the job etc along with $135.00 in parts. The final bill with tax was $2,200! It was a very expensive lesson and ended a long term relationship with this shop. The worst of i was the lights went on the right side of the car last night so I'm waiting for it to get fixed to start my vacation. All in all it truly was a disaster. Thanks for the advice though.
