We are currently staying at Jekyll Island in GA and are looking for a good place to spend a few days somewhere around Apalachicola. We will leave wherever we end up staying, and head north back home to Huntsville, AL, so I am not looking to go as far west as Destin or Gulf Shores. We are looking to spend a few days at the beach with the kids (hopefully we can avoid the oil!) My wife's parents love Mexico Beach and have a lot of good things to say. We would like somewhere that offers relatively easy access to the beach if not right on the beach.
Looking for some ideas...on short notice.

St. George Island SP or St. Joseph Peninsula SP.
Beach access is close; neither CG is right on the beach. I assume you know it's really hot and really buggy a few hours around sundown until November.

I was looking at this place and have read good reviews. It is across Hwy 98 from the beach. The beach is pet friendly so that is why we were looking.

I took a look at Carrabelle and it didn't impress me, St George Island SP has a great beach (9 miles long, decent shelling). The CG is adequate but buggy (skeeters). St Joseph Island SP has an even prettier beach but the campground isn't all that and it is a more remote location. I have pics of St George in my photo link. Applachicola has some of the best seafood on the planet! You may want to consider St Andrews in PCB, not that much further and it is my favorite beach park. No pet access on beach but it does have bayside camping spots and it is only a short drive inside the park to one of the best beaches in the world.

I would agree with Johnbhicks, either St. Joe or St. George. St. Joe is a little more remote than St. George, but I'd stay at either one.

On short notice, at this time of the year, you might have a little difficulty finding a vacancy in a state park. You didn't state a preference, but be aware that most state parks like St. George Island are not full hookups. We stayed at St. George in the last 2 weeks in November and the bugs were still horrible by our trailer (no problem on the beach or in town). I have to assume the mosquitos are even worse at this time of the year. They say they spray for them but I never saw them spray in the 2 weeks we were there. Like a lot of state parks, their budget is tight. Still a great beach, and shelling can be absolutely fantastic immediately after a storm.

We have stayed at El Governor RV Park in Mexico Beach several times. We are there in the winter,so I don't know the bug situation in the summer. It is not a fancy campground at all. We always park right across from the hotel and can hear and sometimes see the Gulf. I love the close proximity to the beach and the beach is just great there. The campground provides me with what I need, water, electric and sewer. Also decent TV. It is closer to Apalachicola and Port St. Joe than Panama City Beach too. I think the campers get to use the pool at the motel, but I'm not sure.

Ho Hum RV Park or Carabelle Beach RV Park then on to Appalachicola for good seafood. Too buggy at the mentioned state parks, like really bad skeeters! We stayed at Ho Hum in March this year.

I'd stay at Port St. Joe State Park. I liked it's proximity to the beach. I wonder if they are still harvesting oysters in Appalachicola. Oysters are one of my favorites and Appalachicola is a great spot for oysters.
