We are planning a trip to Colorado in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if others that have been there recently can give us any information on how busy the NF campgrounds are this year? Has the economic recession caused any less usage this year?

We don't like to make reservations and most of our favorite campgrounds are in Southern Colorado and don't take reservations.

Some years, the campgrounds are really packed in Colorado and sometimes (like a couple of years ago when gasoline was so expensive) not so packed. Just curious about any observations.

Last year I saw many USNF campgrounds were closed. I would do a search on their site.

Thanks. I have already done that little exercise. In the Colorado NF campgrounds (normally open from late May to Labor Day or some till a little later in the season) the campsights are filled with a lot of folks, particularly from Oklahoma and Texas escaping the heat of the summer. Many stay quite a while (14 day rule, but they move around a bit every couple of weeks) and some years the campgrounds are really fuller than other years. This year is extra hot in the Plains but the bad economy has slowed down a lot of folk's travel. That is the heart of my question, are the campgrounds about normal as to occupancy or are they fewer/more campers than normal.

On the weekends, you can forget about a camping site if the campground is within a hundred miles of the Front Range. Lots of residents from Ft. Collins down to Pueblo heading to the mountains for the weekend. It can be a zoo.

We have friends that work the Campgrounds for the National Forest in Colorado & the area your interested in. Some of the parks are closed due to rehab. Go to: mountainborn.com and the Harms will be able to answer your qestions about what ones are open and ones that are temporarily closed. Just drop them a line and tell them "the kidz" sent you their way!!!

THANKS! I will contact them. I looked at the website and I know that area very well. Big winter storm a few years ago just decimated Trujillo Meadows.

PWS,

We have been in a few CO. FS campgrounds this year. Some seem to be almost full and some don't fill up.

Elk Creek North of Chama NM. seems to stay about 60 to 70% full. Bufflo Pass

East of Gunnison on high way 114 in the week we were there was never over 50%.

Cement Creek seem to fill almost ever night by 5 or 6 PM.

Tonight we are in Jumbo Campground in Grand Mesa N F and I think it is full.

We looked at some of the N F campgrounds toward Taylor Park Res. and some were almost full and some were half full.

In the last 5 or 6 weeks we have not found a campground full when we arrived.

I would say just take off and try to get to the campground in early afternoon and you will not have any problems. We try not to arive on the week-end.

Good Luck
