We are getting ready to do 8-10 days of dry camping. Beside the 160 gallons of water on board, I fill a 50 gallon ag drum for additional water- Obviously our gray tank is not that big.
My opinion is that so long as you leave no trace behind, letting gray water go into the bushes/plants is no big deal. This also means it can't be near a stream, lake...
Can it be worse than taking a leak in the bushes? What do you guys do with your water?

Legal issues aside... (most state parks have actual laws about this)
If you use common sense I agree that dumping it will cause no harm but I have found common sense isn't that common. Use biodegradable soaps and don't put anything in your grey but water and the soaps. No grease or food stuff. Because of this I usually dump early in my trip because dishes will eventually be washed into the tank. Also, for those wishing to "only wash their hair" I recommend the outside shower...
When in the same situation I usually do this after taking a shower, the hot water helps make sure the soaps are well dispersed. I usually dig a hole to contain the water, drain only what I need, and then fill the hole in to prevent broken ankles. I prefer to take home a full grey tank to dump after the black. But then I'm weird because I also take my trash home with me because my service allows for as many cans as I put out.
Don't take life too seriously, it's not permanent.

If your boondocking do what suits you. If you're in a campground follow the campground rules. NOBODY wants to camp in you slop after you leave but it you're out in a disbursed area and no water course is involved then go for it. For what it's worth, unless you have some serious kidney disease your urin is pretty sterile so "taking a leak in a bush" is MUCH better than dumping a lot of food particles, grease and other gunk that goes down your kitchen sink.

It is best to not let the gray water sit in the tank. Those bacteria sure grow fast. The warm water and warm weather even hastens it up. You ever smell it after you dump. Better just let it drain out as you are using it.

Use a tote and dump it away from camp so that the next guests in that spot never have to know you did it.
