Further update. On the Channel 5 news at 6pm, they said that the flooding was "threatening" the rv section of Llano Grande RV Park. Evidently there's a leakage problem with a nearby levee. If you know someone with property there, you might have them give the office a call.

Update: Drove over Military Highway this morning. At the bridge near Inspiration Road, the cane fields to the south are all under water. This is the first time we'd been to look at that area. We're REALLY glad the levee there is working as it should. If it weren't Retama, Bentsen Palm Villiage, and other rv parks in that area could be in jeopardy. I would post pictures but unfortunately, I didn't bring my download cable for the camera.

I just received the following "forward" from a friend who winters in Weslaco. It had been sent to my friend. I thought I would share it.

Good morning from Weslaco, TX.
Dear Sponsors We had planned on taking applications in
Nuevo Progreso Thursday Feb 15th, but our dear friend
hurricane Alex and the tropical depression that followed
has caused several problems on both sides of the Rio Grande
River. The heaviest rainfall from both systems were in
Mexico. Mexico received the brunt of both storms and has
had to release much of the water in their inland dams.
Along with the water from their dams and all the water from
the rivers in Mexico that flow into the Rio Grande, there
has been some serious flooding. The Amistad dam at Del Rio
and the Falcon Lake dam along with the Rio Grand river, are
all way above flood stage. Flood stage of the Rio Grand
river is 50 ft. As of last night, it was up to almost 55 ft
and expected to reach 58 ft. The depth when full at Falcon
Lake is 301.2 ft. Yesterday it was almost 308 ft. Amistad
dam as of last night was getting close to normal, but they
are still releasing water which eventually gets to Falcon
Lake. Therefore, they are releasing many millions of
gallons of water from the Falcon Lake dam. This water is
creating serious problems here in the Valley from La Joya
on down. There have been many many homes evacuated up west
of us. Last night they showed the roof of a house floating
down the floodway. Nobody knows whose house it is or where
it came from.
Wednesday it started creating problems here in our area.
One of the main roads going into Mexico from here is FM
1015 which is now closed due to flooding. Several homes
had to be evacuated. The floodway just south of Weslaco on
FM 88 is about 4 for 5 feet from the top of the levee's.
There is a bridge about a quarter of a mile long that
crosses the floodway and there WAS a sod farm there. We
cross that bridge every time we go to Mexico. The water as
of yesterday was almost up to the bottom of the bridge.
The current is very swift going thru there. All the
traffic from FM 1015 now is routed over to FM88. There are
a lot of trucks that now go over that bridge. I sure hope
it holds up until this flood is over. Thank the Lord they
worked on the levee's in that area this spring and early
summer. Several golf courses are completely under water.
Chimney park RV park has been evacuated and most of the
people from that park are winter Texans and will loose
everything. There are several eating places along the
river and the Riverside club and Pepe's are largely under
water. Many of the outlying ranches South of Nuevo
Progreso, Mex are in water. We took applications again on
Tuesday, Feb. 20th. Not many students showed up as this
flooding problem is creating many problems around Nuevo
Progreso. There is a toll road that runs from Reynosa to
Matamorous in Mexico. When the flooding started, the
Mexican highway department tore up the toll road west of
Veracruz/Progreso and used the dirt to build a levee which
diverted the flood water to the south side of the toll
road. This saved Veracruz/Progreso and the town of Nuevo
Progreso and many little ranches on the North side of the
toll road. For those of you that are familiar with the
area, to get to La Posta, and other point south of Nuevo
Progreso, you must take the toll road east to Los Indios and
then Hwy 2 to get to these areas, including Rio Bravo.
Mexican truckers are having a hard time getting around with
their deliveries. We drove east of Nuevo Progreso on the
north lane of the toll road, as the south lane is closed.
There is a area about a good city block long where the
water is coming across the road. And no sandbags holding
it back. I am not an engineer, BUT if they don't stop that
water from coming across the road, I am afraid that it will
wash the north lane of the freeway and then all that area
north of the toll road would be flooded. Oh by the way,
there is a NEW lake from west of Veracruz/Progreso and I
don't know how far west to I don't know how far east, as we
only drove about 15 miles east of the toll road. This NEW
lake has flooded many ranches and destroyed acres and acres
of crop land. Our former school bus driver lives in the
flood area and I could not see his house, so it is very
bad. This is OKRA harvesting time and many of the workers
that harvest these crops by hand are now out of work. The
economy in Nuevo Progreso area is very bad this summer and
many people are hungry. There are businesses in Nuevo
Progreso that are closing. Some of you know Dr Eva Lilia
Garcia from Mabel's celebration. She helps with our
school program. Her and her husband have started collecting
food supplies to take to the ranches. Darlene & I bought
several hundred pounds of beans and rice which is a drop
in a bucket to what is needed over there to help get
started. Many churches here in the Valley are also
collecting food, clothing etc. As of now, we are
concentrating on getting these people fed. I suggested
that Juan Antonio Gonzalez, Dr Eva's husband, contact the
Army and Navy to see about getting these supplies across
the NEW Lake. I think helicopters would be a big help.
At this time, we are thankful that school is out, but if the
water hasn't receded by the end of August, we have no idea
how we are going to get our students from Nuevo Progreso to
Rio Bravo with our school bus.
The good old USA, CANADA and others are always ready to lend
a helping hand. in spite of the remarks by Presidente
Calderon from Mexico about our country. Also, I will find
out why the Mexican Red Cross isn't helping out. There have
been other situations in Nuevo Progreso where the Red Cross
fails to help, but this is a desperate situation.
We thought we had enough work with the school program and
now this. Praise the Lord for the strength to help out as
much as we are able.
If you have any questions, please ask.
