I found a place in NC at Freeman beach that allows beach camping. Does anyone know of places to beach camp further north? I live in MD and have a truckcamper on a Ford F250 4x4

I think the OP is talking about north Carolina Beach.

Thanks Sharker. My son goes tent camping there all the time with his 4X4 Jeep, but I have not been there. I'm not sure I have heard him refer to it as Freeman Park. I did hear him say that the price had gone up this year.

Freeman Beach (Officially, Freeman Park Recreation Area) is on the north end of Carolina Beach (Wilmington, NC area) and is open to overnight camping. If I recall correctly, there's a $20/day charge or you can buy an annual pass for $100. During the summer months its normally fairly crowded with the younger set (my daughter and her friends hang out there quite a bit).

I think a better option is Cape Lookout National Seashore where you can take a ferry to either South Core Banks or Portsmouth Island. Both destinations will take you to islands roughly 25 miles in length and from a few hundred feet to a half mile or so in width. Neither has any permanent inhabitants, roads, stores and only minimal amenities (you can buy ice from the Park Service on Portsmouth, not sure about South Core).

Usually, the ferry is the only thing crowded.

You can camp anywhere between the high tide mark and the dune line except for the Village (Preserved by the Park Service and volunteers but no one has lived there since the early 70's) and the cabin area (the Park Service offers about twenty 'rustic' cabins for rent)

Sunsets are awesome

Sunrises even better

Let me know if you need any contact info or have questions.

THANKS huachuca. Very helpful. I assume I can take a truck camper on the ferry?

Is there any sort of charge for camping at portmouth island? I searched all over and couldn't come up with a conclusive answer.

Truck campers are fine on the ferry. Just be sure you pick one that provides vehicle service (there are several that provide passenger only). If you're going to Portsmouth, the number for Morris Marina is 252.225.4261. I'm not sure of the number for the folks out of Davis that run the ferry to South Core but you can probably pull it from the Cape Lookout NPS website. I'd highly recommend reservations.

There is no charge for camping anywhere on Cape Lookout but I'm more familiar with Portsmouth Island section as I haven't been to South Core in several years. The Park Service maintains a seasonal office on Portsmouth in the Long Point Cabin area (ferry landing). Ice is available there but that's about the only thing you can purchase on the island. Hot showers, restrooms and potable water are also in the cabin area and open to everyone at no charge. Flush toilets and potable water are available in the Village at the north end (20+ miles from the ferry landing). Cabins with john, shower, stove and six bunk beds are available for around $100/night for those who don't want to camp.

We'll be over for Labor Day - hope to see some of you there. Just let me know if you have other questions.

Hammocks Beach State Park also has beach camping, but it is primitive tent camping only.
