He means the torque convertor does not lock, so the slippage between the driving a driven "fans" is generating a lot of heat.
But, something is wrong, that engine and chassis should handle that trailer with aplomb.

How are you loaded. Are all the seats full? I used to tow with a Chevy 1 ton van. Also.

Are you SURE this van is rated at 10K? That seems awfully high for a vehicle that didn't come factory equipped with a transmission cooler.
The tow/haul package always includes a transmission cooler in addition to the receiver hitch and trailer electrical hookup.

Me my wife and 6 children are all thats in the van.
I spoke with the cehv service department and they said the same thing as you guys that there is something else going on.
The service manager said that this van is a great work horse and should not have a problem. He is going to check it out on wed am for me.
I know dealers are more expensive but in this case it may be worth it.

First what is the van's Exact GVWR, GVAW, the tow rating, tongue rating, and tongue weight?
Also what is installed for transmission and oil coolers?
Also how fast are you driving or towing at the time of the red line?
Reason is if you are trying to do 70 down the highway pulling 6500 lbs, that's a lot of weight, add in you and your wife and 6 kids in the vehicle, and you could be running over the limit of the vehicle is designed to do.
Life is short, Play harder.

I would get a separate trans cooler installed. The brakes cannot be causing the problems unless you have your foot on the brake causing the brake light to go on. The trailer brakes do not function unless the truck brake lights are on. They could be mis-adjusted though and are dragging all the time, not just on an uphill tow.

Do you have an overdrive button? If so do you turn the overdrive off when going up hills? Is your coolant the correct mixture? Check your radiator hoses and make sure they haven't collapsed inside the hose. Does it happen at all outside temperatures or just when it is hot? Do you try and maintain the same speed going up hills as on the flats or do you let your van settle in at a lower climbing speed? I agree with others that you need a transmission cooler.

This may seem too simple, but is the gauge working properly? Maybe get one of those scan gauge's to check it.

We have a tow button and have tried it on and off. The coolent is correct, and we go much slower up hill than on the flats.
