We are looking to upgrade our 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 for a nice used 2500. I am leaning towards the diesel because of the gas mileage but am not sure if it would be the right fit. We take about 5-6 camping trips per summer in Michigan with no mountain driving. We have a 5600lb TT right now but would like to upgrade to a 7000-8000 lb 5ver after we get a different TV. My question is whether I should get a diesel or gas engine. Normal driving would be city driving 10-15 miles when not traveling. My husband would also be driving the kids to and from school 3 times a day at less than a mile round trip. I heard this type of driving is not good for a diesel engine. Would it be worth getting the diesel to save money when towing or just getting the gas engine? Is there much difference is gas mileage?

We have a fifth wheel in the weight range you mention. We spent a lot of time (in Michigan) limited to 55 mph with our 1500 Gaser by the gentle slopes on our interstates. IMHO it's not the weight, it's the high front end creating drag that slows you down. We moved up to a diesel and are much happier.

Take a look at the "Tow Vehicles" forum. There is a sticky at the top with a lengthy discussion detailing the pros and cons of each choice. One thing is for sure, there is no "one size fits all" for everyone. For some folks, diesel is the logical choice. For other folks, gas is the logical choice. Current diesel engine specifications and emissions regulations have further obscured the line, with gas becoming an even more viable option for many.
ON EDIT, I see this topic has been moved to the "Tow Vehicles" section. This topic will be closed soon and you will likely be directed to read the sticky at the top entitled "Diesel vs Gas". It has close to 300 pages, so you will have PLENTY of info to digest!
