There is an update, and it appears the RCMP is getting some heat over the investigation.

Person of interest.

This is a great quote by the man in charge:
"Since vehicle thefts — even of motorhomes — are not uncommon, police did not investigate extensively, Webb says

This from an RCMP Sgt. Apparently they did not even try very hard to make a notification to the vehicle owners that their motor home was found.
The person of interest has several outstanding warrants and is known to carry guns.
Unfortunately, no matter what the gun laws are in a State or country, criminals will still arm themselves.

I'm glad they have identified a "person of interest" but I wonder what the connection is?
I didn't see anything other than a person of interest.

The one pair of witnesses stated they did not get a look at the people inside, but there was more than one person in the SUV.

The one witness said that the vehicle was driving unusually slow and that's why they noticed it.

You wonder if the car was going so slow because someone did not disconnect the towing setup properly and messed up the transfer case.

The SUV has been found near Edson, Alberta, still no sign of the couple....Its unlikely the SUV was actually spotted in Prince George, BC, then driven back to Edson, Alberta, where the MH was found burned. Thats a long round trip, for what reason?

This is a creepy story. Is it all rugged terrain where they are lost and spotting the toad?

Don't be too fast to paint Canada as an uncivilized, wild west nothing there nation.

We do have a lot of rugged terrain through the Canadian Rockies, where places like Edson are located. Doesn't matter if you are driving through the mountains in BC or Colorado or the Himalayas. A substantial amount of it is uninhabited.

I have driven that highway many dozens of times. The Yellowhead as it is called is a beautiful scenic drive through the mountains on a wide, paved major highway. Many miles of it are desolate except for a few towns along the way.

The reference to "Highway of Tears" is a sad one, but true because there are so many places where the criminal element can commit their horrendous crimes without being detected. Many logging roads and trails exist all over the area and are frequented by dirt bikes, quads, snowmobiles and the like. You can drive hundreds of miles around the mountains on a dirt road without seeing anyone.

Suggesting that "Up there" has a lack of law enforcement or civilization is like saying the entire US is like downtown L.A. and all crime infested. As a Canadian, I know a lot more about our neighbors to the south than the average US person knows about Canada and I know there are busy crime ridden areas all over the US and also pristine wilderness, just like Canada. The same conditions exist.
Really, the only difference is a geographical border.

Now as far as enhanced cell service, of course we have that in Canada! The stretch of road and location in question are out of normal cell coverage range. Telus has way better coverage in the mountains than Rogers does. So depending where you are, you may or may not have cell coverage when you get away from the inhabited areas.

I hope this clears up a little "Lack of Knowledge and Understanding"that exists out there.
Putting this all in perspective, 20 years ago most of us would have never heard of this story. The internet allows for news to travel further and faster, and makes it closer to home. Many here in the states probably find it unbelievable that the road and location in question are out of normal cell coverage range. But we too, have such roads in certain areas. Many of us probably do not comprehend the idea of of traveling miles with out seeing a house, or maybe not even another car. I think of myself as having lived a sheltered life considering where I grew up, but I certainly have not. Never saw a black person until I was about 12 years old! Have lived in many different areas, including West Berlin Germany, Okinawa, Thailand and different areas of the states. Grew up on a Native American indian reservation, but am not Native American indian. So I certainly have not led a sheltered life. It had been a very interesting and exciting life.

Anyway, I feel for those family members and friends of Lyle and Marie Ann McCann. And I understand the feelings of the folks in that area We all have problems where we live. We had Bucky, who many of you may have heard of and probably forgotten. Washington, or was it Oregon, had the bare foot bandit. Some of these people obtain folk hero status and some don't. It all depends on how far over the line they went!

This is such a sad occurrence. It makes me more cynical, and naturally makes me wonder what can be done in order to improve our personal safety.

First we need to find out what exactly happened. Where is the couple? How did there get there? How did the RV end up the way it did, how did the car end up where it was? At this time everything is speculation.

Naturally you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. We travel a lot of the back secondary roads and from time to time we pass through some areas where we wouldn't feel comfortable if we had to stop. This is one of the reason why we usually stop for fuel at 1/2 tank just so we will have plenty of fuel to get us on down the road to a safer location. Because of previous military training, I have a permit to carry a weapon in most states of the USA. In many years on the road, I've never felt that I might need a weapon, but it is there, just in case. The wife and I both go to the gun range on a regular basis and keep current. I know some people do not feel comfortable around guns and for those people, perhaps a dog may serve as a deterrent to someone intent on harming you.
I think the best way to stay safe is to avoid stopping at any place that is isolated or just does not feel "right." Try to stop at places that are filled with many other patrons so that you do not stand out as a target.
